Coming Soon: Single Black Womanhood, The Comedy — On ABC!

October 26th, 2011 - By Brande Victorian

Single Black Women: Sitcom on NBC
That headline may make you think that I’m going to talk about ABC poking fun at single black women, but it’s actually to be taken literally. Remember earlier this year when “MadMen” writer Tracy McMillan threw some serious jabs at single women in The Huffington Post piece, “Why You’re Not Married”? Well go figure, that article has been the Post’s most successful piece to date, capturing 2.9 million views — and now ABC has commissioned a comedy show based on it.

According to Deadline, the show will be an “ensemble comedy that explores the current state of modern American love — especially the dynamic between the millions of attractive chicks between the ages of 25 and 45 who want to be married… and the men who seemingly refuse to commit to them.”

Yeah, that sounds hee-larious. And I think they left out the word “black” before “ensemble.” Let’s review this shall we? McMillan is black, black women are the main ones complaining about finding suitable mates, and consequently, black women are the focus of countless books, TV shows, plays, movies, articles, and seminars to tell them how to find love (or why they won’t ever find it). Check, check and check. Yes, an all-black cast (or near-all-black one) is likely.

The project is also described as “a brutally honest look at love,” which isn’t surprising given the six reasons McMillan says women are single: You are either a Itchbay, shallow, Slore, liar, selfish, or not good enough. Ha Ha? Ha? Sigh…

Brande Victorian, you are very stupid.
Her HufPost essay had nothing about black women. She only talked about single women in america. There was not even one of the words like African American Women, Black women, or Black females in her essay. How was it about black women.
That is the same issue with Amber Cole's dad, who make the issue an African America issue when it is and should be an American issue. This is not a black women's problem. It's an American Women's problem. And the Tracy McMillan's essay/show is also an American Women show. it will and should include Black, White, Hispanic, and Asian women.
