Erica Watson: Fat Joke TV One

Cracks at fat people never get old, unless of course, you’re the butt of them. On an episode of Love that Girl Tuesday night, plus-size comedienne Erica Watson ironically found herself on the wrong side of a joke when the star of the show, Tatyana Ali, was placed on her body in a spoof. (Interestingly, the clip doesn’t seem to be available on the TV One site any longer, but a still shot can be seen here.)

The brother of Tatyana’s character was running a personal training scam, claiming he’d helped his sister trim down from the obese body shown in a photo (comic Erica Watson’s) to the body she has now. It’s safe to say that Erica is not the least bit amused about the use of her likeness in such a way. In a statement she said:

“I work so hard in my comedy to make sure that all women, regardless of size, feel good about their bodies. We live in a society where the value of a woman is determined by what she looks like and it saddens me that a network like TVOne, which does its best to combat distorted images of African-Americans would in turn use the body of someone like me for a cheap laugh. What were they thinking?”

Fat jokes never get old really? When a person resorts to fat jokes, it means they have no creativity or originality.

I agree with the sentiments that you expressed in this article. However, there were a lot of typographical and grammatical errors that made it kind of hard to read.
