Jay Electronica’s Defense of Badu: Shouldn’t We Expect All Our Men to Protect Us?

October 18th, 2011 - By Brande Victorian

I don’t have to think far back to recall the last time I had an altercation with a male. It was Labor Day weekend, a barbecue, and a man who had more liquor than he could handle stepped to me over a misunderstanding. I remember being angry that he had even thought to approach a woman in such a way and insinuate a violent threat. I remember being disgusted that no male had defended me in that situation and that women had come to my aid, pulling me aside and telling me not to verbally defend myself. But if I didn’t protect myself, then who would?

I thought of this situation when I heard about Jay Electronica’s words of warning to the Game after hearing his verse on the song “Martians vs. Goblins.” He raps:

I spit like I had kids with Erykah Badu/

I f***ed her on the day of that naked video/

I was sucking that vajayjay like it was wanton soup.

Immediately Erykah’s longtime partner and father of her 2-year-old daughter put out a warning to the Twitterverse after congratulating the Game on his return to rap:

ps no more disrespectful Erykah lyrics…our children hear these songs. So chill.

Oh yea, That Erykah message goes for EVERY RAPPER. That is the Mother of My Child.

Our men couldn’t protect us when we were slaves even though they probably wanted to.  We may still be recovering from the trauma that caused.  Maybe that’s why some men don’t step up to protect us; even though they know it’s the right thing to do, they don’t know exactly how.  We were slaves longer than we’ve been free…..    Or maybe it’s a responsibility that some of them just don’t want.
I know for a fact that for just as many black men who don’t step up to the plate for whatever reason, there are just as many and more black men who protect their wives, mothers, sisters, nieces, female cousins, girlfriends, platonic female friends, and female co-workers, and I love them for it!

      Very!

Can you give me a lyric where Jay-Z called B a B!tch? i don't recall that ever being the case. And the difference is Wayne did not call out B name. He called Badu out specifically and in a crazy way. Wayne made a passing reference. i think that is the huge difference. it also comes to confidence and the type of relationship. Jay E probably tired of folks questioning Badu's escapades to put it lightly. And with her history, it might be true. So he already on the defence off top. Yes you want to defend your woman, but there is always a bigger story from the initial story. .

To come to Erykah's defense she had real relationships with her kids father's. I don't think that Jay E is tired of anything but people's silliness. Yes her relationship with DOC was not documened for us to see but they do show respect for each other. There are many people who have been married to to 3 different people and had kids with them and they are still moving on to the next. Married or not Erykah respects her self and really cares for her kids and other peoples kids. That's what important.

I have a love/hate relationship with this article. Though I love how Jay Electronica stood up for Badu, I have a problem with having a long time relationship yet no formal commitment other than having a child together. However, Mr. Electronica still deserves applause for his valiant defense of his woman.

Good article, I think its a sign of the times. Women are no longer honored. I don’t know if a few bad apples have spoiled the bunch but some of us still deserve to be treated with care. This goon thing is not a good look. I can be a lady but if u approach me like a man I will tell you about your bloodcl*at.

Yes I agree with you. Women are not honored…
