Yara Shahidi To Star In New “Black-ish” Spin Off
The hits may keep coming for ABC. Reportedly, the network is in talks to expand their roster of shows with a “Black-ish” spinoff, starring Yara Shahidi, who plays Zoey Johnson on the current series.
According to Deadline, ABC is working with creator and executive producer Kenya Barris and ABC Studios on a project that would focus on Zoey’s transition into college. The new series is set to be introduced as a backdoor pilot episode on “Black-ish” this spring. Still, sources stress that they are still in the very early stages and that no scripts have been written or deals made.
The new pilot is supposed to be a collaboration between Barris and Larry Wilmore, the former “Black-ish” showrunner, who left the series to work on his Comedy Central late-night show. After he left his show, Wilmore returned to ABC. According to the Deadline source, Wilmore already had an idea for a college comedy and they decided to combine it with a Zoey/ “Black-ish” spinoff.
We can’t help but notice the similarities between this, “The Cosby Show” and “A Different World.” If it should come to fruition, it would be Barris’ second new comedy in the works for ABC, during the upcoming season. He also co-wrote and executive produced “Libby and Malcolm,” with Vijal Patel, starring Felicity Huffman and Courtney B. Vance.
Kenya, with the success of “Black-ish” and Larry with his contributions to “Black-ish” and “Insecure,” it would seem that these two have the Midas touch. We’re sure whatever they come up with, will be worth watching.
