TV Shows With Little to No Black People That You Should Be Watching

October 11th, 2011 - By Victoria Uwumarogie

I’m all about diversity. There is something about watching a movie or television show without people that look like me (BLACK) that makes me a little bit confused. Even worse, sometimes I lose my concentration. I still get upset that they could only find like two black people to pop up in New York during the entire series that was Friends. So just like we have black publications, movies, books and more, a lot of black people, like myself, wind up watching black television shows, both scripted, or reality-based, both out of trying to be supportive, and to see other people that look like me. However, there are a wealth of shows with say, maybe one or two black (or zero) people out of a whole cast that make it possible for people to ignore the discrepancies, and just watch good television. Here’s a few that due to great scripts and some awesome acting,  always stand out for the good. Note, they’re all scripted (death to reality TV!):

Going on the internet to reply to things like this; not such a good use of time either…

How can you include Community when it stars 2/7 black characters, has multiple black guest stars, and many black recurring characters (magnitude [POP-POP!], the janitor, the biology teacher, shirley’s crush, Andre) and background extras?

  • Proclifo

You can find many black people on Cops

So the creator of The Wire is now the “white community spokesperson?” I am white and completely disagree with him. My family enjoyed Cosby, The Jeffersons, Benson, Fresh Prince and all things Denzel Washington. Most of my white friends did as well. My parents immensely enjoyed and owned many Motown records and I grew up listening to Smoky Robinson, The Temptations, The Ronettes, the Four Tops, Little Anthony and the Imperials, etc. I can’t see many Asians or Latins watching an all black show based on my own experience with friends of those ethnic groups.

who wants to see any movie or tv show with a token black male in the lead role with a white female on his arm  while the white guy is in the role of a wimp and or a evil nazi terrorist, I mean really come on. tv and movies are all products of the zionist jew fantasy .

reality is killing your tv and spending time with those important to you.

Yeah, those pesky gays should be invisible on television, just because they make you uncomfortable.

I think Community has to get some credit, considering 4 out of the 8 top-billed stars are of a visible minority (Glover, Brown, Jeong, and Pudi). Also, it's hilarious :)

  • Jimbo

As has been mentioned, Community actually probably has the most diverse cast on television, unless we're defining 'Little To No Black People' as any show that doesn't have an all black cast. And hey, really unusually for a television show, it has an asian guy on it who isn't the dude off 2 Broke Girls.

Seriously, Asian Guys pretty much had all the gains they made from that dude in Lost wiped away in a single episode. of 2 broke girls. Probably the most depressing Television group to belong on american television, short of Foreign White Guys Who Aren't British. Or Maybe Black People Who Aren't From America.

i agree, i think Community has a diverse cast (Brown and Glover are great). and while he was playing a Chilean on Breaking Bad, you have to give it up for Giancarlo Esposito. he was making all of us half Black half Italian people proud.

      great list!

  • Chris

If the author actually thought before writing, he/she should realize that Community has more minority cast members than any other show on primetime tv. Lets go through the regular cast. 1) White – Jeff, Britta, Annie, Chase, the Dean. 2) Black – Troy, Shirley. 3) Asian – Abed, Chang. That's two black cast members compared to five whites and two asians and add to that the currently re-occurring Michael K. Williams. Sure, the show could use more black cast members but so could all shows.

The show is set in Colorado. Why would you say it could “use” a few more black cast members? It’s already extremely diverse, and it would be pretty unrealistic for half of the cast to be black.

Oh yeah, one more great show is Happy Endings, funny as heck. The one black person on this show is Damon Wayne Jr. and he is just as funny as the rest of the Wayne's clan. Great show!

I just started watching Modern Family this season and it's definitely hilarious, I must have been under a rock all this time. I also didn't know Kevin Hart was being added to the cast so I will definitely keep my eyes glued. Two more shows that are hilarious this season with minimal black people are, New Girl and Up All Night. These two shows will seriously make you laugh out loud.

  • Reese

I agree. I love the Awkward black girl. I will read a books they have alot of black charecters that I can relate.

LOVE Modern Family and Community. Cam and Mitchell why I love this show so much – and that's saying alot because the entire cast is downright hilarious!!!!! Love Mad Men as well since Day 1 – extremely great writing and everything hence, the Emmy 4 years in a row!! I am also loving new shows Revenge (Wed on ABC) and Person of Interest (Wed on CBS). Will def catch Breaking Bad when they start re-running the series from the beginning. Hate jumping in mid-series trying to play catch up…..

I'm really into Gossip Girl, Pan Am, and I am really hoping they bring The Playboy Club to a new network… Those three are some very good scripted dramas…
