Exercises That Won’t Sweat Your Hair Out

October 13th, 2011 - By Toya Sharee

1.  Yoga

Yoga is a practice in which you transition through different poses and postures that focus on balancing the mind and body through controlled breathing.  Yoga helps improve concentration as well as flexibility.  More than a form of exercise, yoga is also a lifestyle that includes improving your diet, meditation to help find inner-peace, and deal with stress, becoming more in tune with nature. One note of advice though, stay far away from hot yoga for hair purposes.

I workout 4 times a week..my health is more important to me than hair…however, saying that my hair always looks good! I wash and deep condition every 4 days.
I add in a bit of Mizani oil and wrap straight after a workout…..it then dries straight with no fizz. If I do a spin class I will wash my hair immediately afterwards if not…i stuck to my every 4 days routine.
I think ‘some’ of us like to make out that our hair is soooo hard to maintain, when I don’t believe it is!!

I sweat profusely & yoga has hands-down worked for me. There’s a lit bit of moisture but not too much.

Weight loss is strictly a function of burning more calories than you take in. You can do that without sweating, it just may take you longer to burn those calories and may take you longer to get in shape, but it will work. Personally though, I woud rather sweat a little and work out for less time, but to each his own.

But no, there is no need to sweat to lose weight. P.S. I talked to a personal trainer to make sure what I was saying is correct.

Also this article never said anything about weight loss, it just said exercise. SO CALM YOUR TITS!

The fact that this article was even written is proof that Black women need to adjust their priorities! We are the fattest, most unhealthy people in this country, and are dying of diabetes and cancer and heart attacks more than anyone else, AND WE WOULD RATHER DIE YOUNG THAN HAVE KINKY HAIR!!??? Something is truly wrong with this picture…..

This is a very well-written article. The author DID NOT say that these exercises wouldn't make you sweat. The idea is that you wont sweat PROFUSELY, and you would be able to better maintain your hair whilst working out. Of course you will perspir when exercising, but that doesn't mean that your hair has to look like oughta-be-damned. Physical activity is always better than being sedentary even if its just not enough for you avid "exercisers" out there.

you got to be sweating to get in shape…so whatever to this article…smh

Whoever wrote this article is obviously someone who really doesn't workout because coming from me, someone who is avid exerciser who workouts 5 to 6 times a week, none of these (with the exception of swimming) is true. If you are really pushing yourself you will sweat with all of these workouts. And what's wrong with sweating? You better get over yourself so you can take care of yourself!

  • Just saying

Yeah, all I'm gonna say is if you're not sweating while doing a workout, especially with lifting weights/strength training, you're not doing it right.

forgot to add^^ after you lose the weight continue to exercise to maintain your current weight. i'm thinking the exercises won't be as intense because it's just maintaining vs trying to lose so less sweat anyway…

I don't understand this article. Sweating is the result of a thermal heat-generating process that happens in your body when it is burning calories which is what needs to happen if you want to build muscle and burn fat to be fit and maintain a healthy body weight. All these exercises in this article are good for maintaining weight. If you want to lose weight, you gotta sweat. I don't understand how a woman wants her hair to look good, but then is ok with her muffin top or an extra set of boobs on her back? In order to lose weight, you gotta burn at least 500 calories a day. 2500 calories burned = one pound of fat burned. And then you gotta eat 500 calories less and reduce your fat, salt, and sugar intake.

You cant possibly think these are the requirements for weight loss. According to what you wrote, P90X is just about the only way to lose weight. Dont get me wrong, what you said will work, and pretty quickly, but you dont have to do that much to lose weight. All you have to do is take in less calories than you burn, you will lose weight.

Also I eat about 1500 calories a day. If I ate 500 calories less, I would actually slow down my metabolism and gain weight. Not to mention not having any energy to work out.

this is what i told a friend of mine who needed to lose a lot of weight.

if you need to lose more than 40lbs there are no 2 ways about it (you gon sweat!). find a hairstyle you can do yourself easily (i recommend half-wigs and wigs or natural wash-and-go) and can rinse easily.this will allow you to do all the work that you need to do and not worry about sweating your hair. when you lose the weight you can go back to your old hairstyle.

1)choose whichever regimen of exercise you wish.
    2)exercise hard! move that booty!
    3)be consistent.
4)make positive changes in your diet.

after you have lost the weight you can go back to your old hairstyle and incorporate the tips Ms Gonzo ^^ has written. you'll probably sweat less too.

I've been perm free for 2+ years (although I do wear my hair straight) so working out in the morning without having to spend an hr + getting my hair right has been quite a learning experience. Here are a couple of things that I've found to be very helpful:
    1) putting my hair into a high ponytail or bun to keep the hair off my neck makes a HUGE difference (prevents unnecessary heat from the hair sitting on your neck while you break a sweat – silicone hairbands are perfect for this
    2) wear one of those skinny elastic headbands right at the hairline to get your edges pulled back to minimize the frizz
    3) shower immediately after your workout – the longer the sweat sits on your scalp the greater the chance for itching and frizz
    4) invest in a good dry shampoo to give you a refreshed feeling.
I've found that doing these minimizes the amount of work I've got to do after a workout to get the hair right
