White House Usher Angella Reid

Angella Reid has become the first woman to hold the position of White House Chief Usher. This role, which has been in continuous existence since 1901, has always been held by a man until now. The role was previously held by Rear Adm. Stephen Rochon, also African-American, who was appointed by former President Bush. The Boston Globe reports:

As White House Chief Ushe, Angella Reid will be responsible for maintaining the grounds and facilities of the White House, overseeing the planning and execution of events, and preserving the historic aspects of the residence among other responsibilities. Her previous leadership roles in the hotel industry make her a great fit for the job. The Boston Globe has more:

Ritz-Carlton’s Angella Reid will be the first woman to serve as “Chief Usher”, the White House announced yesterday.

Reid will be the ninth person in the role as Director of the President’s Executive Residence (also known as “Chief Usher”) and will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the operations and activities that take place in the Executive Residence and on the Executive Residence grounds.

Reid currently manages The Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City, Arlington, Virginia. She brings over 25 years of experience to the White House “Chief Usher” role, including stints at Ritz-Carlton properties in Miami, Florida and Washington, D.C. The position was recently held by Rear Admiral Stephen W. Rochon, USCG (Ret.), who left earlier this year to take a position at the Department of Homeland Security.

Angella Reid marks a historic milestone as the first African-American woman to take on this significant position. It is amazing that in 2011, there are still so many firsts for black women to achieve — and that we keep on achieving them.
