Pucker Up! 10 Treatments You Need If Your Lips Are Going To Survive Winter
It’s that wonderful time of the year when you can go from looking fly and fabulous to an ashy mess with a simple gust of wind. Though most of us know it’s time to double up on shea butter and coconut oil for our bodies, and use a heavier moisturizer for our face, our lips are often that area of skin that gets neglected until they’re, chapped, crapped, and in pain.
Like every other part of your body, your lips need multi-level TLC. The skin needs to be exfoliated and moisturized on a regular basis to rid the area of chaps and cracks and lay a smooth foundation for all of those beautiful earth tone lipsticks and stains you’ll be rocking this winter. But don’t wait until your lips get past the point of no return to do something about them, keep at least one of these scrubs and moisturizers or balms on hand to keep your pucker smooth all season long.
Basin Lime Sugar Lip Scrub – ($8.99)
I picked up this lip wonder in a jar at Disney Springs and my lips have thanked me ever since. Made with only four ingredients — raw sugar, extra virgin olive oil, avocado butter, and flavor oil — this scrub is as tasty as it is effective. A couple of times per week I apply it to my lips and rub them back and forth for 15-20 seconds to remove dead skin, and because the ingredients are 100% edible I don’t even have to rinse.
Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment
Last winter my lips were the driest they’d ever been, to the point that they were constantly chapped, and this medicated lip ointment was a lifesaver. What I liked best about this option from Blistex was that it didn’t have a strong sent or a thick, beeswax-like texture. The product is thin, but effective.
Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 – $7
Another soothing favorite of mine, Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 is a great maintenance moisturizer. Packed with protecting elements Squalanea, Lanolin Wheat Germ Oil, and Vitamin, E it’s basically like a winter coat for your lips.
MAC Lipscrubtious – $16
If you love all things MAC, the makeup brand’s new line of lip scrubs are for you. The sugar-based exfoliators come in five flavors –Candied Nectar, Fruit of Passion, Summer Berry, Sweet Brown Sugar and Sweet Vanilla — and are formulated to buff away flakiness and leave your lips smoochable.
Another go-to product of mine, this lip balm has a slightly gritty texture thanks to its composition of beeswax, honey, and colloidal oatmeal, all of which help relieve the discomfort of dryness, repair damaged skin, and lock in moisture.
This balm contains 0.9% Menthol which is the active ingredient that will actually ease drying discomfort, and it’s also formulated with eucalyptus extract to help mask the strong odor of Menthol. Together, they provide soothing relief that’s not overpowering.
I’ve been using Vaseline since the beginning of time, but I tried the Vaseline Lip Therapy in the original tin for the first time this Christmas (stocking stuffer) and was very happy with the texture. I liked that the product stayed on my lips rather than making them greasy or sticky and I didn’t reapply nearly as much as I do with the jelly.
If you can’t be bothered with scooping out lip scrubs, try this lip scrubbing pencil. Simply apply it like you would any lipstick, then use your finger to move around the exfoliating concoction of shea butter and the proprietary Rainforest of the Sea™ antioxidant complex, then remove with a damp cloth. You can also wear the scrub on its own as an all-day treatment.
This dual balm has shea and cocoa butter, olive oil and jojoba in its blue inner core and wheat germ oil, beeswax and ceresin in its outer ring to provide double conditioning.
Bite Agave Lip Mask -$26
A mask for your lips? Yup! The brand behind the lipsticks we love has created a leave-on mask that’s a blend of organic agave nectar, jojoba oil, vanilla co2 extract, and triple the amount of the antioxidant trans-resveratrol found in red wine to soothe nourish and hydrate lips. Apply at bedtime or wear throughout the day.
