Were You Wearing This In 2000?

Can you believe it’s already 2017? Time is just speeding by us. It feels like just yesterday we were ringing in a new year while fretting about Y2K, otherwise known as the Millennium bug, only for nothing to happen whatsoever.

(function(d, s, id) {
if (d.getElementById(id)) return;
var js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;
js.src = ‘//cdn4.wibbitz.com/static.js’;
}(document, ‘script’, ‘wibbitz-static-embed’));

Do you remember where you were in 2000 and how you rang in the year? Better yet, do you remember what you wore? Looking back on the fashions that shaped us so many years ago, you can see that we liked to jazz up the basics. But these days? No more bandanas, denim jumpsuits, square-toe shoes and sequins on everything.  But that’s not to say that the clothes we were so psyched about then are necessarily tacky now. They were just a sign of the times we were living in.

With that said, here are a few fun examples of trends everyone seemed to be into back in 2000. Were you rocking any of these looks? We know we sure were…

Vivica A. Fox

Did you have a bandana for every outfit?

From the asymmetrical top to the blinged-out designs on it, the late singer’s look was definitely on trend.

Janet Jackson

We couldn’t afford an entire leather look, but pleather? Oh yeah, we had a closet full of that stuff.

Halle Berry

Berry and ex-husband Eric Benet’s ensembles scream 2000, from the exposed thong to the sequined top and bottom. And who could forget those shades?

Erykah Badu

For those of us who were trying to jump on the neo-soul wave, crochet was in.

Destiny’s Child

You had to go crazy with the prints and monograms around this time. Destiny’s Child definitely played with denim and Dior, likely a Tina Knowles creation.

Sheer tops with shiny jewelry, thin eyebrows and glossy lips? Very Eve, and very 2000.

Mary J. Blige

The shaggy haircut thanks to some precisely cut layers was all the rage. And a lucite heel? A must.

Ananda Lewis

We don’t know where Ananda Lewis went off to, but we know that dark denim with stitching in all colors went out of style after the early 2000s.

Was your hair braided like this? And what about the ruched top with ruffles?

Tyra Banks

Demin with fringe on the sides and a flare bottom? We definitely had them. And we have to shout out the fact that a lot of denim in 2000 didn’t come with belt loops for the sake of showing off a good thong — or crack.

Blu Cantrell

You couldn’t go wrong with a fedora and loose top or dress with a low-cut front.

Alicia Keys

There goes that fedora again! Did you rock yours with beaded braids and a suede jacket like Keys? And who didn’t have an overly-embellished belt?

Jada Pinkett Smith

Sequin halters, sandals and tiny frames for the win!

Toni Braxton

We’re pretty sure this flowing jumpsuit paved the ways for gauchos, which we were obsessed with in the mid-2000s.

Deborah Cox

We didn’t have this ornate hat, but we did have those bangles! Plus, we knew plenty of people with that halter and those pointed-toe shoes.

Lil Kim

Destiny’s Child played with monogram prints by Dior, but Lil Kim did it best in this Dapper Dan-esque Louis Vuitton trench, hat and mini-wedges.

Lauryn Hill

The twill jumpsuit/romper was quite the cute look on Hill and many other women in 2000.

From the lucite heel to the cropped leather pant, arm band, layers in her hair and the classic metallic top, Monica’s look screamed ’00s fashion.

Don’t ask us why Brandy was at the Source Awards, but those braids, those sunglasses and that headscarf totally fit the look at the time.
