Tyrese Kicked Off Radio Station for Speaking Against Liquor Stores Near Schools

September 29th, 2011 - By Victoria Uwumarogie

Well look who decided to have a “Fight the Power” moment and speak out against something? No, not Kanye for the billionth time, but R&B singer Tyrese. Can’t say I saw that one coming…

According to the singer, and our friends over at TMZ, Tyrese went on WJKS KISS 101.7 in Delaware to promote his new album (what new album?). Tyrese allegedly saw a liquor store near a school on the way to the station, and once on air, decided to make a passionate plea for people in the Delaware community to do something about it. The audio from the interview released finds the singer saying, “Get them cats out of here … selling alcohol right across from your kids school, homie — put the pressure on them homie … you know how to put pressure on dudes selling in your hood.” I’m guessing the owner of the show wasn’t feeling his out of the blue activism, because when they went to commercial, Tyrese was asked to hit the road. According to TMZ, the owner confirmed that he felt as though Tyrese was “disrespecting the Delaware community.”

Per the usual, Tyrese took to his Twitter page to let his followers know what happened and how backwards the situation was. He summed it up by saying, “If you don’t STAND for something.. You will damn near fall for Anything.” It’s so interesting the things Tyrese seems to get riled up about these days. Remember when he went in on Kim Kardashian for not “supporting” La La Anthony and her show “La La’s Full Court Wedding” like he felt she should have? Couldn’t get behind that one. But I definitely understand where he’s coming from this time around. Alcohol around the kids? Not the best look. But I must say, I’m thinking he must have dropped an F bomb or something because kicking someone off of a radio show for having an honest opinion about something that does the affect the community, just doesn’t seem like the normal procedure…

But what do you think? Read more about the incident at TMZ.com.

I actually live in Delaware and I have to thank Tyrese even if I don't agree with most things he says or does.

Tyrese was right on the money with this one, the radio station owner should feel bad about their decision.

Everyone here is so concerned over the demeanor of Tyrese but EVERYONE here is failing to grasp the bigger picture, he was stripped of his right to freedom of speech. Whether you like what he says or not he has the right to his opinion. Shame on that station for pulling the plug on him they must be owned by narrow-minded clear channel radio.

"I can stand across the street from your house and scream b.s. about you and its legal "

If it's slander it's not legal.

Royaltee u wrote a whole paragraph yet u still havent made ur point. How is bishop being an internet gangster there were no threats made. Youre really irrational. The point is, this is about the kids & they def need to do something about that liquor store.

Well I read a story online that the real reason Tyrese got kicked off the radio show was because he was promoting a concert not because he protested about the liquor store being near an elementary school.

Tyrese means well but he comes off as rude and arrogant which is such a turn-off. It is not what you say but how you say it. I used to follow him on Twitter but he is so annoying. I just don't care for him like I used to.

Well, I don’t know what neighborhood this was in; but I do know in my city, the more affluent or (good neighborhoods) would never allow a liquor store to be present near a school. I have witnessed neighbors come together at there neighborhood meetings and complain about the conduct of the customers and loiterers at the local liquor store… Then get the owners into the meeting and demand improvement or get the store shut down. That business owner knew the community meant business, so he definitely complied. I didn’t listen to the interview, but I agree that communities can come together and demand changes to help improve the quality of living if they care.

The school was Eastside Charter formally known as MLK. I used to go to the school when I was in elementary. The school is next to the projects so go figure.

Funny but true. I see his point & was thinking shouldn't it be the same as that law about selling drugs within 500 ft. of a school? Just something to think about what your kids are being exposed to everyday. If you don't want them to see someone selling drugs to think that its okay then you don't want them seeing someone abusing alcohol perhaps in front of the liquor store either. An example would be seeing someone who has just purchased alcohol get into a car but take a few drinks before driving off. I'm not saying that I'm against the selling/buying of alcohol but it is sold in grocery stores that are near schools too. What I am saying is their young minds are impressionable & we as parents need to make to advise them about what is right & wrong.
