Madame Noire Attends the African American Literary Awards

September 28th, 2011 - By Veronica Wells

There are tons of award shows devoted to honoring musicians and actors but the African American Literary Awards are the only awards that take the time out to highlight the accomplishments of black writers. The awards were created by Yvette Hayward, a public relations executive who worked extensively with black authors. Now in its 7th year the show draws some pretty big names. Madame Noire attended the show and spoke with several special guests.

    Favorite Author,
    Walter Mosley
Followed by the author of the book I enjoy the most Zora Neal Hurston, After reading  “Their Eyes Were Watching God” it became a full featured, vivid colored, acoustically authentic movie in my mind.

Beverly Jenkins provides a historical background to all of her romance and fiction works. Love her, I learn alot every time I read one of her books.

For me the premier author is the one and only J. California Cooper. An artsit without peer. I know of no one who has read her writings who doesn't love her. If you're not familiar with her. Treat yourself. You will o be disappointed. Love her, love her, love her. You will too. I bet a fat man a sack of doughnuts, you'll agree. Life.

My favorite was Octavia Butler because she wrote sci fi and was down to earth. I'll have to check out L.A. Banks.

Cornel West! We hardly 'ever' see eye to eye; but, that's ok! I love a good challenge… The best part is at times "HE" DARES 'ME' TO THINK — BEYOND!"

I don't read alot of books by Black Authors, but Mary Monroe is a genius and I read one book by Michelle Stimpson and that was great. I'd love to read more of her books.
