How to Explain Homosexuality to Your Child

September 26th, 2011 - By LaShaun Williams

The LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender) lifestyle and culture is on the road to normalcy in this country, which means parents should prepare themselves to do some explaining. With Disney’s The Suite Life on Deck including stereotypical, effeminate male characters and advocacy groups pressuring Nickelodeon to feature openly gay characters, it is something we have to choice but to address.

I remember being in the checkout line of the grocery store with my son, who was about 18 months at the time. There was a lady in front of me with her son, who appeared to be around four years old. In front of her, there was a man in a lavender woman’s blouse and fitted jeans. As we stood there waiting, I could see the little boy was a bit taken by the young man dressed in women’s clothing. After two minutes of careful observance, with his head curiously titled, he asked his mother, “Why is that man dressed like a girl?”

Oh, the benevolence of kiddie candor. I was tickled by his innocence.

His mother, on the other hand, was speechless—and mortified. She tugged at the boy’s arm and silently signaled him to hush. I thought to myself, I wouldn’t know what to say either. It was at that moment that I began mentally preparing myself for the day my son was old enough to ask similar questions.

What would I say when he asked why the man in front of us was wearing a dress? What would I say when he questioned why some of his classmates had two moms or two dads?

Intolerance breeds intolerance. Not just against gays, but also against different races, religions, genders, etc. Instead of teaching intolerance, why not educate and explain it without hiding behind scare tactics?!? This makes me scared for the kind of world my children will grow up in. I will teach them tolerance, regardless of how THEY decide to believe (I will teach them my own morals, but eventually they will make their own decisions about life.)
Kids pick up way more than you know. Teaching them that something is ugly, a disease, shameful, etc is just wrong! Sure, if you don't agree with someone's lifestyle you should explain why, but without making other HUMANS out to be animals. They are not hurting you or your children. Seeing a man in a dress or two women kiss will not turn them gay or traumatize them if you teach tolerance. GLBTs are not molesters, drug abusers, criminals, etc any more than straight people. They are HUMAN with rights and feelings and teaching kids otherwise is plain and simply wrong!
I am not religious, but it is crazy to me that a lot (not all) religious people are so against other HUMANS. Doesn't your God teach tolerance, love thy neighbor, etc? I love how people pick and choose what is convenient in their religion. So much hypocrisy!

I would let my kids know like ''yeah I don't believe in homosexuality religious wise, but I will not hide or not tell them what it is and that they should respect them and treat them with kindness just as they would want to be treated.

"mommy, why can't someone fix it?"

" No one can really catch this because it doesn't show until a kid is much older. That and because there's no so many of them that they've formed groups that are trying to force other people to think this is normal and trying to guilt people into believing that this is ok so that no one questions this or checks in to how to fix this for our children later on. So you will most likely continue to see this until our whole society is filled with people who don't want to be with the opposite sex. This will seemingly be good for people like this man on line with women's clothes because brainwashing and guilting people into accepting his situation as normal makes him feel normal but in the end it just means that soon we won't be able to have babies the way nature (or god) intended because no one will be naturally attracted to each other. As a result ALL of our children will have to be born in test tubes. So all that to say sweetie…try to drink bottled water at all times."

This is just plain stupid. Homosexuals have been around since the dawn of time and there is nothing making you gay in the water or anything else. For the record, I am completely straight,

  • aimee

There is nothing abnormal about gay lifestyle either. Also, rights are rights. So, the comparison is valid. Though the struggle may not be the same, the wants and needs are. And, not every Christian is as bigoted as you seem to be. Don't agree with homosexuality, fine, but there's no need to speak about gay people in a degrading manner. Call yourself a Christian? Be Christ like. Learn some tolerance.

Black people need to wake up. Active promotion of this lifestyle in our community WILL start to effect ALL OF US. 2 individuals of the same sex deciding to have sex, is not right or wrong, but when its multiplied 100's of 1000's of times it will effect who your children will have available to choose from eventually. It's not right or wrong…but there are consequences.

Wow i don't think thats how homosexuality works. It doesn't spread like a virus. Gays have been around since the dawn of man. When people think that homosexuality is contagious i really start to question the person who says it. I mean i have known gay people and i have NEVER had the urge to try anything gay so when people say stuff like that it makes me question the sexuality of the person who says stuff like that

    • Jen

You can't catch gay… you are born that way. Seriously! If you are straight, I am sure no amount of seeing gay people will convince you otherwise. It just doesn't make sense!

  • sweettea

tell them the truth, “I have no idea why, they just do “. Being a parent doesn’t mean you know everything

    • IllyPhilly

      Best Answer Hands Down!!!

  • Kayla

im nostalgic for the times where you didn't have to explain it. *sigh*

    • Mary

I'm not. Homosexuality has been around since the dawn of man. I would rather be the one to explain it to my child then for them to have to stumble on it on their own.

    • Caydence James

      Me too. :-(

Does this mean that MN will start having articles on black women competing with white women and white men for black men?

    This world is ridiculous!
I respect everyone, but too many personal aspects of life are being commercialized and emphasized that the deeper things of life cant be pondered and explored. Creating a generation of young fools and old fools which permeates all races, religions and social classes of this country and the world as a whole.

So I see that many people who claim to be tolerant will give me negative remarks, but tolerance is a two way street. I am suppose to readily accept your life style just as you are suppose to readily accept my view point.
Such hateful people, "love what I do, while I hate you for what you think about it".

  • Monica Naotala

This article is a joke;really they don’t want mommies? How can 2% of the population put pressure on the other 98% to support something that doesn’t make sense. This is turning into a modern Sodom and Gommorah, it’s wrong, it’s nasty and the reason its hard to explain to kids is because it is morally wrong and it makes no sense. It is not natural to change your gender or be attracted to the same gender, Christians need to stand up for what’s right.

    • IllyPhilly

Right after they stand up for police brutality, child molestation, the falling of the public school system, the famine in Somalia, and domestic violence. You and Eddie Long pray for me.

    • Mary

…um you might want to revise your statistics. Homosexuals make up 10 percent of the world population. And thats just the ones who are open about it….

      • Monica Naotala

Okay, so if out of 10 people 1 person is gay, the other 9 people, regardless of their beliefs; will have to accept the new bill in CA to teach gay history in public school to pacify the 1 gay person? Regardless of the beliefs of the majority the other 9? That's doesn't really make sense, and how is that right or ok?

        • Mary

well also black people only make up 11 percent of the population (look it up) so does that mean since the other 9 is the majority they shouldn't have to be accepting of the minority?

    • bill

The minority does not pur pressure on the majority to support them, but rather to accept them, in the same way black people deserve the same rights as white people, or buddhists the same rights as christians.

  • Ashley

Im not a parent but i personally dont think itll be that hard for me to have the conversation with my kids one day. I will teach them my morals and beliefs which is that i do not approve of homosexuality. I think the key is to drive it home to your kids to treat people the way they would want to be treated, with kindness and respect even if you don't agree with them all the time. Just teach your kids tolerance.

    • Deeana

Even if you teach them tolerance, they will stil want to know why the situations the way it is. Kids don't accept everything so easily, and people make the mistake when they think otherwise.

      • Ashley

Yea but that is delving into a different topic of either science, religion, society etc…you just have to make things simple for little kids, as they get older you can go into more details.

Some boys like to kiss girls and some boys like to kiss other boys.

  • 360degrees

I am facing that because I am part of that community. I have a 2yr old who is going to grow up with those questions. It scares me to have to have that conversation with him although it is very necessary

  • JustAshley

I love kids, but I am so glad I don't have any.

My nephews and their jaw dropping candor is enough to leave a young mommy traumatized. LOL They pick up soo much- even when you think they aren't paying attention! They will come out an ask you questions out of the blue and while your stuttering and struggling for an answer your brain is screaming, "WTH?!? Where did they see or hear that at?!?" LOL
