How to Love Yourself

September 26th, 2011 - By Veronica Wells

The other week in the comments section under my “Love is the Opposite of Fear” post one of our readers asked a very poignant question. Usually I read the comments section and don’t respond. But it caught my attention and another one of our readers shared her curiosity. “A Black Woman” asked, “TO: The writer of this article about love,  I’ve heard it many times: Love yourself. However, what does that mean exactly? How does one love himself or herself?”

Over here at Madame Noire we’re always talking about the importance of loving ourselves but the process of how to go about doing it can be a bit elusive.  First let me begin by saying that I am not a therapist or even an expert in loving myself. I had to really reflect on this question and solicit the advice of my network to even begin to answer this question thoroughly, and this list is far from exhausted. We’re all plagued with doubts, insecurities and fears, even the most self assured person will find that loving themselves is not something you master in a matter of weeks. It’s a lifelong process. Here are some attitudes you can adopt that can help you along in the journey to loving yourself.

I really needed that…I am 25 years old and I have tons of issues…absent father/bad relationships from the past/molestation etc…and sometimes I feel like I’m nothing more than damaged goods…I’ll never find a husband and I’ll never be a mother…because I have not figured out how to love myself first…I realized that I beat myself up waaaay to much and I should start working on loving me…so that I can give love and be loved…

Loving yourself equals taking great care of your emotional, physical & mental health.

Put your needs first so that the demands of the others & the world do not deplete your inner peace.

Value yourself and decide that you will stand up for yourself respectfully in all areas, with all people.

Think for for yourself and do research before deciding to commit to an opinion, a religion, a belief, a habit, a relationship, a job, a home, an education…..MAKE DECISIONS based on knowledge rather than whims or others.

""What behaviors or attitudes have you adopted that prove you love yourself?""

I have adopted the 2 GREATEST COMMANDMENTS that are in THE HOLY BIBLE.

LOVING GOD with all of my HEART, MIND, SOUL and STRENGTH and LOVING MY NEIGHBOUR AS I SHOULD LOVE MYSELF.

I added the word SHOULD because so many hate themselves and many really don't know how to LOVE themselves.
