Yandy and Mendeecees

We all saw Yandy Smith and Mendeecees Harris tie the knot last Memorial Day in a very extravagant wedding special. They did all that to prepare for Harris’s eight-year prison sentence, and it was quite the beautiful fete. But more than a year later we’re finding out that the pair may have said “I do,” but didn’t sign a marriage license to make it official.

In the preview for tonight’s episode of Love and Hip Hop New York, Smith is seen telling her friends Kimbella Vanderhee and Juju (the girlfriend of rapper Cam’ron) that “I have a union with Mendeecees, but I did not go into a partnership with Mendeecees and the government.”

Sounds odd, but it’s reportedly a business move. According to The Inquisitr, Smith and Harris didn’t sign a marriage license because if they had, their assets would have been joined. With Harris in prison and two children outside of their relationship to take care of, it is reported that in some states, mothers of children can go after a man’s spouse for child support. Considering that Yandy can’t seem to have peaceful relations with Samantha Wallace and Erika DeShazo all of a sudden, the mothers of his two oldest sons, we couldn’t see her being okay with giving her money to them if he can’t pay. And she is quite the busy businesswoman.

While there are perks to being married, Smith seemed to be well aware that footing the bill for Harris wouldn’t be one of them. Maybe when he gets out and back to work, the couple will sign a marriage license. But to Smith, who proudly calls herself his wife (and goes by Yandy Smith-Harris), their union doesn’t mean any less without the paper.
