Long gone are the days of slathering cocoa butter on your body to combat stretch marks, apparently. These days, ladies are looking to technology to get smooth and scar-free skin.

If you look on the internet, you’ll see that everyone is freaking out over the craze of “camouflaging.” The method, which was created by Brazilian tattoo artist Rodolpho Torres, entails taking flesh-toned ink and filling in the scars so they’re less visible. His Instagram is filled with demonstrations of his heavily praised work and impressive before-and-after shots that you won’t believe. With 1.2 million followers and counting, eyes are always on Torres’ work with many of those viewers debating on whether or not they should try out camouflaging, too.

So, how safe is this really? The ladies over at InStyle, reached out to Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi, Founder & Director of Capital Laser & Skin Care and Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Dermatology at the George Washington University Medical Center, to seek her advice.

“I think it’s safe, but I would be concerned that the tattoo color fades and changes with time (all tattoos change and fade with time), so the color at first will not be the same as the color in 5, 10 or 20 years,” Dr. Tanzi offered. “Also once the tattoo is placed, it is NOT easy to remove. I should know, I’m a laser expert who uses lasers to lighten tattoos all the time.”

In the end, this procedure is definitely one that you’ll want to take much time to consult about what’s the healthiest option for you. Currently, the treatment is only available in Brazil, but there are other methods like microneeding and laser treatments that can combat stretch marks and are derm-approved.

What do you think? Would you give it a try, if it wasn’t exclusive to Brazil?
