We told you yesterday that Insecure is returning for a second season in 2017, and we are excited about that because the series is funny, smart and relatable. Aside from the great writing, one of my favorite things about the series is the work of newcomer and standup comedian Yvonne Orji. The Nigerian-American beauty plays the successful, confident, but romantically thirsty character Molly, who is Issa’s best friend on the show. As she stumbles to find the right guy in L.A., signing up for elite dating apps, running into possible catches at rap showcases and getting the “I’m just not looking for a relationship right now” treatment, she has some good sex with some interesting characters. What’s interesting, though, is that in real life, Orji is a virgin. So what is it like to film such scenes when you’ve never actually had sex? According to the 32-year-old, it’s a piece of cake.

“I see Molly’s sex scenes more as comic relief,” Orji told Vulture.com. “This week with Jidenna was more of a light make-out session, but I actually haven’t watched the later episodes where Molly gets it in. But I know that Molly is not Yvonne, so I had to figure out how to marry the two. How do I be true to this character but at the same time protect my brand? We found a middle ground where you’ll see I have my clothes on for the most part. Debbie Allen directed next week’s episode and we talked about what wouldn’t be shown. I would never do something I’m uncomfortable with. It’s funny — because I haven’t had sex before, there were technical things they thought they had to teach me. But as a woman, you’re in tune with your sexuality. And I’ve seen movies! I’m not a prude. I didn’t grow up in an Amish land with no TVs. So I was like, ‘Hey, I’m familiar with how this works. I’m just not engaging in it.’ It was just a matter of making it realistic.”

And realistic the scenes definitely are.

Taking on the challenge of being a sexual character as a virgin was one Orji was intrigued by. As she told The Ringer, while they have some things in common, Yvonne and Molly are very different.

“I’m a single gal in L.A., so I know that story very well. It’s kind of like we walk this parallel,” she said. “But it’s no secret that I’m a virgin and I’m waiting till I get married, where Molly is very free sexually and it’s just like, ‘Hm, this is going to be very interesting to tap into this part of her.’ I don’t curse in my real life but, like, Molly curses every chance she gets. There are so many things about her that are very similar to me and there’s so many things about her that feel like, ‘I don’t believe in these things.’ I really had to dig deep and find the funny and nuanced and really bring her to life. Because even though she may not be me in that regard, I have friends like her. And I’ve seen her and I could have been her. I’m living on the edge a little bit as Molly. It’s fun.”
