Langston and I continued to call and text regularly. Two months later, I found myself heading back to New Orleans on assignment. I let Langston know I was coming back and he responded with the hearts in the eyes emoji.

“I’ll make up for last time,” Langston told me during one of our phone calls.

“Yeah you will,” I joked.

Langston and I made plans to have a late dinner since the only time he had available was after 9pm, which is when he got off work.

I was excited to see him. We’d been flirting without any pressure and I felt like we had a little unfinished business. The day I flew into New Orleans, Langston confirmed our plans and as it approached 9pm, he called.

“What’s up?” He asked casually.

“Getting ready to meet you. What’s up with you?” I asked laughing.

“I’ve got some bad news,” Langston said.

“Hit me.”

“I got called into my other job. I can’t see you tonight…”

I sighed.

“But before you get disappointed, I might still be able to swing something tomorrow.”

“I have my interviews tomorrow,  you know that,” I said, deflated.

“I know, but I can make something happen early morning,” Langston said, almost pleading.

My call time was 2pm, so breakfast could work. Although, I will admit I was annoyed that I wasn’t able to use libations as an excuse for smearing myself all over him like peanut butter after dinner, drinks and a nightcap. “What time?” I asked, distracted by my own dirty mind.

Langston hesitated, “Like 7am?”

“Ugh, why so early?”

“I’ve got to get some rest before I go back to work at 4. So I’ll see you right after I get off my overnight job and then get rest after I leave you. So…breakfast?” Langston asked.

“Sure, breakfast.” I sighed.

That next morning, a little after 7am, Langston called me.  I was still in bed, forgetting to set my alarm the night before after some Frenchman St. debauchery.

“You ready?” Langston asked before I could muster up a hello that didn’t sound exhausted and hungover.

“Uhm,” I squeezed out of my throat.

Langston laughed, “Well I’m not far from your hotel. I’ll come up and we can figure it out. I’ve got a couple hours.”

“Ok,” I said groggily into the phone. I hung up and laid back down and after a few minutes, I popped up with a gasp. I took the fastest shower of life and oiled up. I threw on a T-shirt and boy shorts, aka a seduction uniform. I looked in the mirror, “Breakfast is served.” I laughed at my own corny joke.

Langston knocked on the door.

I opened it casually, trying my best not to be obvious about my lust, despite my outfit. I reached up to hug Langston and he squeezed his arms around my waist.

We hugged in the doorway for longer than we needed. Langston broke the hug. “Are you going to let me in?”

“Of course,” I stepped aside.

Langston walked in and immediately sat down on the floor and then he proceeded to lay down. “I’m exhausted.”

“What are you doing?” I sat down on the bed.

“Getting comfortable. I like the floor.”

I gave Langston the side eye. “Right.” I threw a pillow at him. “This might help.”

He laughed and in his deep New Orleans accent, he said, “It do.”

I laid across the bed. “You’re funny.”

“What The floor thing? I really prefer the floor. Ever since I was little, I would sleep on the floor,” Langston said.

“Oook…”

We continued the small talk. I learned more about all the jobs he has and why he has them–his daughter. She’s 11. He sends her to private school and lives like a pauper. He works hard for her. He smiles the whole time he’s telling me this.

I’m smiling back. I grabbed a pillow and joined him on the floor.

Langston sat up. “Danielle, I…”

“What’s going on. I just figured I would join you down here,” I said getting back on the bed.

“I’ve been trying to figure out how to tell you this since we met,” he said.

“Lord. What?”

“Oh, it’s nothing bad. I just got saved and my life is dedicated to Christ. I’m celibate. I’m not really dating like that.”

I cut him off. “First of all, yasss Jesus! And ok, what’s not really dating like that mean? Because, you’re here.”

Langston laughed, “Yeah, I’m here. I don’t know what I consider this to be, but I do like you. I want to get to know you. But I have to be focused on God. I’ve done a lot of things in my past and I don’t want to be that way anymore. So I’m changing.”

“And people can change,” I tried not to sound disappointed. Here I was ready to throw myself all over Langston, forgetting that I had values of my own. I laughed at how mad I was that Langston and I weren’t going to be sharing sheets anytime soon.

“I’m saving myself for marriage,” Langston admitted. “I’m at church during my free time. I just really want something different, you know?”

“Oh yeah, I know,” I said.

We kept chatting throughout the morning. A friend of mine who was on the same work trip texted me to meetup for brunch. I was starving. Langston and I talked for 5 hours.

“You hungry?” I asked slipping on some sweats.

“Yeah, I could eat.”

“Let’s have brunch downstairs. A friend of mine is here and she just asked if I want to go,” I said, standing by the door.

“Let’s do it.” Langston got up, gathered his stuff and walked up to me, leaned down and kissed me on the cheek. “Thanks for not being upset about everything. It’s funny because you’re ideal but, honestly, can you really date a born-again Christian?”

I walked towards the elevator. “I don’t know. This is all new to me. Our distance could help.” Langston followed me.

“Challenges are fun,” I said.

“Oh, so I’m a challenge?”

“We’ll see.”
