How-To: Blogging 101: How to Create a GREAT Blog

September 20th, 2011 - By Christelyn Karazin

Everybody and their Aunt Ethel has a blog these days, don’t they? We all have an opinion and thanks to the Internet, we get to opine on everything from politics, alien conspiracies and the best way to barf when you’ve eaten too much food to maintain the shape of your skeleton (not recommended).

But what makes a GOOD blog? You know, the kind that people come back again and again, checking and re-checking comments and logging in each morning to see what comes next, like some Korean soap opera?

As a (kinda) pretty successful blogger, I can tell you what’s worked from me, and it’s really quite simple, but many overlook the obvious. The Ancient Chinese Secret is to know your audience, respect your audience, and entertain your audience.

Lots of good info. A few things that were left out: Ask yourself do you REALLY want to blog? Also pick a blogging platform (Blogger which is owned by Google, Posterous, and my (among others) fave WordPress. Understand there is a difference between occupying a seat on a platform and owning the domain. For instance, JennyJones/blog.com is occupying a seat on the domain blog.com, if I wanted to go on godaddy or anywhere else where I can buy a domain, and JennyJones dotcom was still available, I could buy it and there's nothing you can do about it. And being that your goal of writing in the first place is so that people will go to your site/blog and read, understand that tagging your posts is important, that is one of the all important factors in traffic getting to your site/blog.
