Beyond The Map Takes You Into The World Of Brazilian Favelas
On the heels of the 2016 Olympics commencing in Rio de Janeiro, the Google team decided to work with residents from the Brazilian city’s favelas (slums) to get an in-depth look at their day-to-day lives inside areas that are often overlooked by the Brazilian government.
Titled, Beyond The Map, the video series offers viewers insight on how favela residents navigate life and survive being alienated from other parts of their country (and the world) because they can’t receive such simple things as mail. Through this project, Google helps humanize the identities of Brazilians who live in a demographic so often criticized and yet forgotten.
Before you watch the interviews, here’s an interactive map that allows you to explore a variety of favelas that have been featured in the series.
