Tyra Banks’ New Beauty Contour Stick Is All About Inclusivity For Darker Skin Tones
After spending over two decades as a supermodel, there’s no one that knows best about the lack of diversity when it comes to both the fashion and beauty worlds quite like Tyra Banks.
Banks, who has grown her own empire ranging from film and television to writing and much more, has been very focused on her cosmetics line, Tyra Beauty, even after becoming a mom to her own 5-month-old son York. So much so that a beauty trend that lacked inclusivity for black women inspired her to expand her line consisting of mascara, plumping lip gloss, self-wetting makeup remover wipes, to include a contouring stick called “Sculpt in a Stick ($25).” And the best part? The selection of colors compliments all skin tones from light to deep to deeper than deep.
“I was tired of our chocolate toned sisters not being able to contour,” Banks told ESSENCE.com. “I created this so that everyone has the ability to contour and play with shadow and light — since that’s really what contouring and highlighting is.”
Banks’ own fair share of horror stories from those that weren’t familiar with working with darker, African American skin tones is what fuels her passion for cosmetics. She also divulged that she finds it her responsibility to make sure that everyone that uses her products feels beautiful and feels represented.
“When we have products and colors that we know are targeting the African American demographic, I go insanely deep with it. I want to make sure that we’re addressing it right, because I’m the best person in my company to do it.”
