Why Michelle Obama & Michele Bachmann are Held To Two Different Standards

August 22nd, 2011 - By Victoria Uwumarogie

Ever wondered why everything Michelle Obama says gets dissected and scrutinized to the nines? Simple statements about her pride in this country somehow get misconstrued as un-patriotic statements that only the angry black wife of a “socialist” husband could make. But when Michele Bachmann makes similar comments, the media, the political pundits–everyone, plays stupid and ignores them. Why? A wack double standard that black women continue to endure that says sit down and shut up, or run the risk of being viewed as the stereotypical raging b***h.

Our friends over at theGrio analyzed this standard and questioned how and why Michele Bachmann gets to say whatever comes to her head with zero filter, but any formed opinions about policies and what U.S. citizens should be doing about their health by the FLOTUS are shunned. Writer Sophia A. Nelson breaks it down to a T:

“Black women in America, including Mrs. Obama, still have to deal with racial stereotypes, double-standards, and being viewed as “invisible” or better “kept in our place”…Let’s face it, America is far more comfortable seeing Mrs. Obama talk about growing gardens, dote on her husband, mother her kids, support our military families, and help our nation eat healthier, than we are seeing her discuss policy, form opinions, or speak her mind.”

Nelson makes some pretty deep points that you should check out, but do you agree? Do you think Michelle Obama’s words are held to a different standard than Bachmann’s because she is a strong black woman with opinions she likes to share rather than a meek woman in the public eye? Let us know!

i agree with the last comment. once again the blacks have to make everything race base. Why not listen to the comment from Samuel L. Blackson? Go out and get an education (preferable that you pay for yourself and not demand that the government pay for it) marry an equally educated person of color, raise your kids to respect not only family values but that of the community and be a productive member of that community. THAT is the why to make change.

This is not what I thought it would be. Michelle Obama is fawned over by the media who hang on her every word and gush about her clothes, her hair, everything. Michelle Bachman is routinely demonized by the media who can't stand her, her faith and her politics. This article is insane. So it's racism to take offense when Mrs. Obama says she's proud of her country for the first time in her life because her husband gets the nomination? How do you address how vilely Laura Bush was treated in the media? Because she was white? Come on, here. Do you really think that honest criticism must always be fueled by racism? Please. Get over this constant victimizing and framing everything through race.

I'm white, live in the south, and would say I follow politics fairly closely. And I am so proud of our First Lady. She's such a wonderful role model for our country and everything she says comes with such compassion and intelligence. Michele Bachman on the other hand is a huge embarrassment for our country. She has clearly been given a free ride throughout her life because she has obviously not risen based on her intelligence. This is an outcome of a male dominated society, and honestly, one where women still default to attacking each other instead of being supportive. I don't think any woman would see Michele Bachman as a threat because every time she opens her mouth a string of completely flawed words come out (a la Palin). Michelle O. may be seen as threatening to other white women because she is intelligent, beautiful, and successful in her own right not just because of who she married.

A threat to what? I can't see that she stands for anything.

Low or non achievers have nothing to fall back on except the race card.

She's a loser, the worst first lady ever. A total "DO NOTHING". She has'nt done anything for black people, or white people, or poor people, or the sick, or mistreated. She does'nt do technology, or promote America, she's is not a business women, she is not a politcian. Not into education, or the arts. She's a total "DO NOTHING".
