I first found the hit web series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” on AOL’s Black Voices. With a title like that I didn’t know what to expect. After all, the internet is known for pairing the word “black” with some foolishness. But after the first minute I was hooked. Who couldn’t relate to the main character “J”, a woman who boldly cut all of her hair off, lost her boyfriend because of it and writes angry gangsta raps to cope with the pain. Yes! From the first episode I knew it was a hit and six episodes later I have yet to be disappointed.
Luckily for the show’s creator, director and protagonist, Issa Rae, Awkward Black Girl is not only well put together, it’s developed quite the loyal following. The “Watch Party” chat room for the debut of the show’s 7th episode was so populated it crashed the website. So for some reason if you’ve been missing out on the deliciousness of Awkward Black Girl here are five reasons why you need to quit playing and jump on a growing band wagon before you get left.
