This Is What It’s Like To Spend A Week At One Of Oprah’s Favorite Places: The Miraval Resort

December 20, 2011  |

African American women are now the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in America, but for many of us self-care is still a radical act. We have no problem working as hard as we need to to get ahead professionally, but when it comes to feeding our souls and tending to our mental and emotional needs, many of us inadvertently drop the ball.

Burnt out in my quest to discover my next chapter in life, I decided I didn’t just need to get away — I needed to get away with purpose. Sure, traveling is fun, but a week of sipping Mai Tai’s on the beach wasn’t going to get me any closer to figuring out and achieving my goals. And so, I reached out to my equally hard-working aunt to ask her about her favorite wellness retreat in Tuscon Arizona, Miraval.

Consistently ranked as one of the world’s top destination spas by Travel + Leisure — and one of Oprah’s favorite places no less — Miraval is an all-inclusive resort that offers a number of unique growth and development programs, luxurious spa treatments, fitness classes, and healthy cuisine that promises to leave guests transformed physically and emotionally at the end of their stay. In other words, it was just what I needed to disconnect from the fast-paced life of being an editor in New York City and reconnect with my purpose in life.

Check out how I spent my week at this desert Oasis and returned feeling rejuvenated and more focused than ever.

Day 1

My transformation begins as I head out west

12 pm: I arrive at the Miraval resort in their complementary shuttle and am immediately blown away by the scenery.

12:20 pm: I’m checked into my room and already begin anticipating my first night’s sleep in this lush bed. Through my patio door I have a direct view of the mountains. It’s breath taking.

2 pm: Finally unpacked, I have my first Miraval meal outdoors at the Cactus Flower Restaurant. I may have to learn how to make this meal in one of their specialty culinary classes.

4 pm: After touring the grounds and grabbing a shower, I decide to put my first day’s worth of spa credits to use. Did I mention Miraval gives each guest nightly credits that can be used on spa treatments, private sessions or signature programs? The amount of credits depends on the package you purchase for your stay, but they’re all rather generous.

I decide on the Herbal Body Balancing treatment which is designed to restore your natural harmony by detoxifying the skin and calming the nervous system. This 75-minute treatment felt like the right way to start my week of restoration.

7:00 pm: Body balanced, I have dinner at the Cactus Flower again.

8:30 pm: I grab a glass of wine at the Brave Bill Lounge and call it an early night after a day of traveling.
