Shea Moisture

After eyeing Shea Moisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil line for months, I finally caved and made a purchase this past weekend. Instead of going all out and buying the entire line at one time, I chose to ease into it. I decided to go with the Strengthen & Grow Leave-In Conditioner. I’m always on a quest for the perfect moisturizer, and my other beloved leave-in that I can’t seem to find in stores is running low, so it looked like the perfect time to try something new.

According to the folks at Shea Moisture, this “reparative leave-in conditioner” is designed for damaged, brittle, and overprocessed hair. It’s also ideal for those who perm, color, or heat style their tresses. It promotes growth and prevents breakage by increasing the hair’s elasticity. It also reduces the appearance of split ends by providing a “protective layer” to strands.

My experience:

First, I can appreciate the size of the container. Although this product was priced in the low teens at Walgreens, like most other Shea Moisture products, it appears that you get so much more product. The consistency is a bit runny, which made me somewhat apprehensive; however, I quickly came to appreciate this trait once I began applying it to my hair. The watery texture of this leave-in makes for much easier distribution unlike many hair butters, which require quite a bit of effort for even distribution. It smells a bit like Playdoh, but not in a disgusting or overwhelming way. It’s a more subtle scent, and the smell did not linger for a long time after I applied the product.

I applied the leave-in after washing and deep conditioning my hair. I first allowed my hair to air dry for a while and then I applied the leave-in and blow dried my hair. After I was done, the first thing that I noticed was how hydrated my hair felt. It felt as if my hair almost had a wax coating—but not in a bad way. It didn’t feel heavy or greasy or anything like that, just healthy, strong and protected. I suppose that this is the “protective layer” they mention in the product description.

My hair instantly appeared darker and fuller, which was a super bonus for me because my hair is pretty fine and thin. At work the following day, I received so many compliments on my hair. One of my colleagues even asked if I added extensions to my hair. That’s how much fuller it appeared.

I will definitely be purchasing this product again and I look forward to trying other products from the Shea Moisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil line.
