Congressman Allen West should be careful what he asks for. When he drafted an email to fellow Congress member Debbie Wasserman Schultz stating that she “has proven repeatedly that (she) is not a Lady (sic)” and “
therefore, shall not be afforded due respect”,
He essentially suggested beliefs hearkening to the days in which women could not be members of our government. Wasserman Schultz, you see, has been very blunt in her condemnation of West and the way his policy making fails his South Florida constituency. Wasserman Schultz called West out on the House floor, saying he supported a bill that would cut Medicare spending among other things.
This is what she said exactly:
“The gentleman from Florida, who represents thousands of Medicare beneficiaries, as do I, is supportive of this plan that would increase costs for Medicare beneficiaries — unbelievable from a member from South Florida.”
While her language was not at all unprofessional, by directly calling a man on his shenanigans, she has deviated from antiquated standards of “ladylike” behavior.
However, if we were back in those days in which a woman could not frankly and directly address her colleague in the same method in which he would address another man, Allen West would not be a member of the United States Congress. If he worked on Capitol Hill, he’d be making sandwiches or slinging a mop about the House floor; were he a man of letters, he’d be working at a Negro college.
You don’t want to go back there, Mr. West.
Congressman West has stated that he is not only refusing to apologize to Wasserman Schultz, but that she owes him an apology. You can’t get much more ridiculous than that. Not only did he send his colleague this email, he CC’d the Majority Leader and Minority Whip to maximize the sting. He then repeated most of the letter’s language in a campaign fundraising email to his supporters.
Bizarrely, Congressman West takes very personally his colleague’s challenging of his policies…which is exactly what political rivals are selected to do. Beyond that, he seems to find it inappropriate for a woman to challenge him so. If Allen West doesn’t have the presence of mind to receive harsh criticism from a female colleague (one who has been in her current position for seven years to his seven months), then he is not suited for the challenge of being a member of the House of Representatives in the year 2011.

Look, Debbie, I understand that after I departed the House floor you directed your floor speech comments directly towards me. Let me make myself perfectly clear, you want a personal fight, I am happy to oblige. You are the most vile, unprofessional ,and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up. Focus on your own congressional district!
I am bringing your actions today to our Majority Leader and Majority Whip and from this time forward, understand that I shall defend myself forthright against your heinous characterless behavior……which dates back to the disgusting protest you ordered at my campaign hqs, October 2010 in Deerfield Beach.
You have proven repeatedly that you are not a Lady, therefore, shall not be afforded due respect from me!
Steadfast and Loyal
Congressman Allen B West (R-FL)
