Celebrities Who Do Their Own Makeup
Having a team of makeup artists beat your face to perfection before a night on the red carpet sounds like a Hollywood dream. But not every celebrity uses professionals to look their best each and every time they need to step out for events or just a night on the town. They’ve been contoured, shaped and highlighted so often that they’ve turned into makeup experts themselves. Some of them are so good at DIY makeup that they’re even responsible for their signature red carpet looks.
Can you guess which stars are gifted with their brow liner and brushes, and which sport a strictly professional look? We certainly didn’t expect to see some of these stars on this list. (Spoiler Alert: And that goes double for Beyoncé.) From A-listers, who like to play in paint to Black models who say the professionals still don’t carry the right shade for them, get ready to be surprised by some of the names that you find on this list.
Zendaya Coleman recently showed her makeup skills off on Instagram and declared, “I need to start doing makeup tutorials.” If this look is anything to go by, we’ll definitely tune into them.
Blake Lively says she occasionally does her own makeup for red carpet events. Lively said, “I think it’s fun. Through doing photo shoots, I get to work with so many amazing hair and makeup artists. That’s my version of YouTube.”
Tracee Ellis Ross
Actress Tracee Ellis Ross isn’t just known for her signature lip, but she always takes control of that part of her look herself when she’s in the makeup chair. That and doing her eyebrows and lashes.
Leomie Anderson said that many Black models have to have their makeup game on point. That’s because some artists at major shows still don’t have products that work for darker skin.
Not only does Kate Middleton do her own makeup, but she also did her makeup for the royal wedding!
Kate Hudson does her own makeup and beats the faces of her friends. She’s so good, in fact, that she said, “I used to make jokes that if I didn’t make it as an actress…at least that was my back-up.”
Singer Shakira said you can usually catch her doing her own makeup — even for The Voice. Why? “Because I’m good. I’m cheap. I’m fast.” It’s hard to argue with that.
When her makeup artist was unavailable for the Golden Globes, Ashley Madekwe took her makeup into her own hands and then posted it on Instagram. Looks professional to us!
Singer Janelle Monáe’s signature look is all her own because this droid is self-sufficient. Monáe said, “I never like to inconvenience anyone I don’t have to. I mean, I may not do the best job, but if I can do it, I would just rather it be that way.”
Not only does Scarlett Johansson do her makeup for most events, but she also gives killer makeup tips.
Clearly Beyoncé has her go-to makeup team. But the star said that sometimes when you see her on the red carpet, she’s done her own makeup. She’s even been known to trim her hair!
Carrie Underwood recently shared her affinity for wearing a lot of makeup, which she sometimes applies on her own.
“I probably like to wear more than the average lady—I like big hair and eyeliner. On the road, when I’m on tour, I do my own makeup. It’s relaxing.”
Diane Kruger may be the queen of no-makeup selfies on Instagram, but on the red carpet she wears makeup — and she does it herself! Kruger said she’s been taught by the best.
“I was always surrounded by great makeup artists when I was modeling and learned a lot from them.”
The Shameless star does use makeup artists for big events, but she handles things herself for smaller ones and she learned her signature tricks where a lot of us did.
“I feel like I learned it from YouTube tutorials. Just trial and error. I would sit at home and google ‘How-to smoky eye.’ And try it and it would be a disaster and I’d be like ‘Why do I have sparkles on my nose?'”
