How To Be The “Bigger Person” In Trying Situations

July 19th, 2011 - By SisterToldja

Service With No Smile: We often come across customer service people who don’t seem to like serving people. It’s hard to blame them with the hours are often long and the pay isn’t usually that fab. Plus, when dealing with the public you are likely to be dealing with a ton of people of varying levels of politeness, many of them HIGHLY rude, which can ruin your day. When you come across the stank mama at the fast food spot or the uppity dude at the boutique, make sure that you stay calm and keep entirely respectful. The second you “go there” with them, you challenge your ability to have the situation rectified with a manager and may find yourself getting asked to leave! Say “I’m sorry if you are having a rough day and I definitely don’t want to make it any worse. I just need…” and clarify where you stand. If you can’t get some respect…ask for a higher up.

Good advice! I would also say that it goes back to the age old saying "it's not what you say, it's how you say it". But I would take it a step further and say, it's not what happens, it's how you handle what happens.

I wrote about a similar topic on my blog in a column called Letters To My Unborn Child. Check it out if you like here – http://mynameismisswhite.blogspot.com/2011/01/let

I have a coworker who uses incendiary comments like a verbal hit an run, then plays victim. Minimize the stage, too many clowns not enough circuses. Ask questions in a soft voice instead of matching volume. Don't fall in any trick bags. It's a set up. You never know who's watching. Ain't nobody mad but the devil.

You just gave me some great advice ashley. I’ll do that from now on! It makes sense no point in arguing.

Unfortunately, I deal with these kind of situations on a daily basis. Living in one of the most trying cities (NYC) it can be rough! I usually get the attitudes and not-so-kind service in retail service, what I usually do is kill them with kindness (if I can) , though it may not always work but 9 times out of 10, it does have somewhat of a positive outcome.
