For many of us, crying can cause exhaustion, a headache or even make our sinuses feel clogged, i.e. it’s not sexy. However, when it comes to other people crying — specifically the opposite sex — there are others who become hot and bothered once they see a tear drop.

Yes, you read that right.

Broadly reports people with dacryphilia (crying fetishes) have created their own online communities and forums in order to share non-pornographic GIFs of people trembling while tears stream down their faces in the hopes of sharing what makes them aroused.

In their study, Broadly notes that dacryphilia has been a hardly researched topic in the non-normative sexual interest sphere. The fetish was first acknowledged in an empirical study by psychologists Richard Greenhill and Mark D. Griffiths of Nottingham Trent University in March 2015. In their research, Dr. Greenhill and Dr. Griffiths concluded there are three thematic areas of dacryphilia: compassion, curled lips and dominance- submission. The majority of  participants in the research revealed that compassion triggers their dacryphilia. For example, the participating  women said they were, “aroused by the compassion of comforting the crier.” They also noted their common sexual fantasy is meeting a person who had a “hard life and being able to comfort them.”

As for the male participants in Dr. Greenhill and Dr. Griffiths’ study, they expressed being attracted to women’s crying faces but not their tears. If a woman had a  “protruding, curling, contorting or bulging of the bottom lip” while crying, the men released oxytocin, a hormone that makes them want to comfort the women instead of being sexually aroused by them. Though some men noted they were aroused by women, they were in consenting relationships with the person who cried when acting submissive. One woman shared she enjoys crying when she is dominated mentally, emotionally or physically. Once she starts crying because of her dominating sexual partner, she believes their BDSM session has been successful.

While some women and men may enjoy observing their partners cry before having a sexual encounter, others mention taking their dacryphilia fetish further by pursuing adult baby fetishes. People with this fetish treat their partners like infants and become aroused by changing their diapers — a fact that’s caused many to assume pedophilia, but those who have the fetish claim its appeal is the ability to be dominant in a sexual encounter, not be aroused by the child-like role playing.
