Gonorrhea Superbug Found

July 11, 2011  |

Have you heard about the new strain of gonorrhea on the block that could create a worldwide health risk? New developments show that the first superbug  (H041) of gonorrhea has been found in Japan. A superbug is a bacterium that is able to survive exposure to antibiotics.

This could “transform a once easily treatable infection into a global public health threat,” reports Reuters.

What does this mean for you? In the words of the great philosopher Snoop Doggy Dogg, “ain’t no loving good enough to get burnt while I’m up in it.” According to the CDC, “gonorrhea rates among African Americans in 2007 were 19 times as high as those of whites.” So if there’s an incurable gonorrhea, you can expect that our community will be disproportionately affected if an outbreak occurs.

First things first: PROTECT YOURSELF & GET TESTED. Just because this hasn’t become a huge problem in America yet doesn’t mean that you need to wait until there’s an outbreak to start making smart decisions. For 50 percent of women and five percent of men, when gonorrhea goes undetected it can lead to other health complications such as; kidney failure, meningitis, and sterility.

Abstinence is the best way to fight against STD’s but for many of us the flesh is weak and we like to engage in good ole fashioned loving. Ladies, don’t be afraid to carry condoms if you’re sexually active. Only a jerk (Will.i.am) would have a problem with a woman who respects her body enough to be protected. Fellas please think with your big head and not the little one and grab a condom before the magic happens. But most of all, please be informed about your status. Sometimes when we go to the doctor we’re so focused on HIV (and we should be) that we forget to ask about getting tested for herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis. Listen, it’s summer and our hormones are raging and what not, but let’s be responsible with our health, and the health of those we are sleeping with.
