9-Year-Old Girl Mauled To Death By Pit Bull
A family is in mourning after nine-year-old Amiyah Kayla Dunston was mauled to death Sunday morning by a neighbor’s pit bull. According to the New York Daily News, was enjoying some time outdoors in the front yard of a playmate’s Elmont, New York home when the dog lunged at her.
Both a neighbor and the mother of Dunston’s playmate tried to get the dog off of the girl, but they were unsuccessful.
“I took my broom and tried to push it away,” said the neighbor who intervened. “No parent wants to see what I saw.”
“The dog had the girl in its mouth like a rag doll,” said another neighbor.
According to the dog owner Carlye Arnold’s roommate, Anthony Jett, Arnold was in a relationship with the mother of Dunston’s playmate. Multiple Nassau County police officers arrived at the scene. When one officer ran towards the injured girl, the dog released his grip and charged the cop. The officer fired several shots, killing the dog. Dunston was rushed to Franklin Hospital where she later died. Her family is heartbroken.
It is still unclear why the dog attacked Dunston. Nassau County Detective Michael Bitsko told Newsday that the department received no prior complaints about the dog, and relatives of Arnold say that he was peaceful.
A Go Fund Me campaign has been launched to assist Dunston’s family with funeral costs.
