Relatives of Cory Jones are desperate for answers after the 31-year-old church musician was shot and killed by a plainclothes police officer early Sunday morning. According to the Washington Post, Jones was returning home after a Saturday night gig when his car broke down Interstate 95 just north of West Palm Beach, Florida. Jones phoned fellow band mate Matthew Huntsberger for help. Shortly after the call, Huntsberger arrived with oil. Unfortunately, that didn’t help Jones’ SUV, so the men called up a tow truck company for assistance.

“I tried to help him the best I could, but I’m not a mechanic or anything,” said Huntsberger, who left around 2:30 a.m. while Jones waited for the tow truck.

“When I left him he was sitting in his car calling roadside assistance,” Huntsberger said. “I never would have thought that someone was going to come kill him.”

Details surrounding the October 18 shooting remain scarce at this time, but the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department released a statement claiming that Jones was armed when officer Nouman Raja approached what he believed to be an abandoned vehicle.

“As the officer exited his vehicle, he was suddenly confronted by an armed subject,” the police department said in a statement. “As a result of the confrontation, the officer discharged his firearm, resulting in the death of the subject.”

The shooting is currently being investigated by the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office.

“They’re saying he was armed, but I don’t know if I believe it,” said Huntsberger. “Of course they’re going to say that. If I was there, maybe it’s a different situation. I just don’t know what happened.”

Relatives remember Jones as a well-liked, church-going man who was a drummer at the Bible Church of God in Boynton Beach.

“He was a good kid, just coming home from a gig,” said Jones’s cousin Frank Hearst, 36. “He was just an all-around good guy who never got into any trouble, never had any record. It’s just an unfortunate situation.”

The victim’s family is outraged that more information has not been provided in regard to his death. They have no idea how many shots were fired or what weapon he was alleged to have been carrying.

“They’re saying Corey approached him armed, which is a total lie,” Hearst said. “That don’t make sense.”
