Make It Last Forever: Steve And Nikki Carpenter
A couple of weeks ago, you met Amirah and Jarrell, the couple on an indefinite honeymoon across the world. This week, we’re introducing you to Nikki and Steve Carpenter. Nikki is a lifestyle blogger and author, who recently penned her first book When God Says Yes. She followed up her first release with a devotional called The 30 Day Man Fast.
MN: How did you meet?
Steve and I have a complicated, yet beautiful story. My best friend, Briana, and his best friend, Lloyd, are brother and sister.
MN: Where would you say that you were mentally and emotionally before meeting your partner?
Before meeting Steve, God had me in a peaceful and content place. I wasn’t looking, but the previous years before were wasted on looking for my husband. I finally came to a place where I was content in Christ and my single status. Next thing I knew, voilà, here comes Steve.
MN: Tell us about the proposal.
The proposal was everything. They had me thinking I was going to see Nia Long (LOVE her) at an exclusive ESSENCE event here in Chicago. Instead, gospel star Jonathan McReynolds walks in singing “A Couple of Forevers” by Chrisette Michele, and members of my family walk in one by one and hand me a rose. The crowd split and Steve came walking in with the last rose. It was so romantic. I definitely said “Yes” before he finished asking me.
MN: In what ways did you prepare for marriage prior to meeting your spouse?
Well, before meeting Steve, I prepared for marriage the wrong way. I was so focused on wondering when I’d get married, that I often neglected fully enjoying my singleness. If I could go back, I’d make sure none of my time as a single woman would be wasted and completely trust God had a plan for me.
MN: Had either of you been married before?
Steve was married before to a beautiful woman by the name of Geneisha. During their second year of marriage, she was diagnosed with cancer. She went home to be with God after five years of marriage. I can’t say I’m happy my husband lost his first wife, but I can say I’m grateful God used me to restore my husband’s broken heart.
I knew Steve was the one after I went on a 30 Day man fast. It sounds weird, trust, it was weird for me as well. However, I knew God told me not to talk to any men for an entire month. After the fast, another guy was pursuing me hard. I almost gave in, but God told me if I date him, I’d miss out on Steve. I was so confused, because Steve was mourning his wife and wasn’t even thinking about me. Well, turns out God was right.
MN: What are your top two marriage commandments?
My top two marriage commandments are to always be vulnerable with your spouse and get over it, quickly!
MN: What’s a major marriage don’t?
Don’t ignore your spouse’s dreams. Steve and I have been blessed with extra income because we allow each other to pursue our dreams. If I’m not able to write, I’m not myself. If Steve couldn’t do music, it would kill him.
