Upstate New York Woman Keeps Mother’s Corpse For Over A Year To Collect Government Checks
Mary Kersting, of upstate New York, has admitted to charges brought upon her after keeping her dead 93-year-old mother’s decomposing corpse in her apartment for over a year so she could continue receiving the mother’s government benefit checks, according to Fulton County Prosecutors.
Assistant District Attorney Chad Brown told PEOPLE that the 60-year-old “pleaded guilty to charges including grand larceny, disposal of a body, and endangering the welfare of an elderly person,” after stealing over $13,000 in Social Security and pension benefits. Brown also confirmed that Kersting admitted to never calling the authorities for medical attention when her mother, Hope Ruller, passed back in October 2013 of undetermined causes.
The discovery of the mother’s dead body was prompted from a cell phone call a family member made to the authorities in December 2015 about a welfare check on Ruller.
Kersting will be sentenced on Nov. 6 and faces six months in jail.
