For as long as I’ve been hearing the name Iggy Azalea, I’ve been hearing about T.I. defending her against hip hop critics. But apparently, the rapper-turned-reality-star experienced a change of heart after the 25-year-old’s hostile response to Q-Tip’s informative hip hop lesson, which he aimed at her by way of Twitter. In an interview with Hot 97’s “Ebro in the Morning,” Tip explained why he somewhat distance himself from the Australian-born rapper.

“It took a bit of a rest stop,” Tip said in reference to her music career. “In her defense, she had a lot thrown at her at one time. Any human being anywhere gon’ have a hard time adjusting…Some stuff they brought upon themselves. In some cases, it kind of was just the easiest place to put some pent-up aggression.”

However, after Iggy’s hostile reaction to Q-Tip, T.I. felt that he could no longer defend her and eventually, their relationship was somewhat compromised.

“After the Q-Tip thing,” he said. “After I kind of had smoothed it over, like okay, ‘What is really meant to be said here is…’ After it was cool, everything was cool, and then they kind of came back and undid what I had just [accomplished]. I’ll be all the way real: I’m a loyal partner. If I rock with you, I’m gon’ rock with you…I really do feel that they just needed a little more time to adjust, which I feel they can do. They have the talent; they have the charisma.”

Differences aside, he does still seem to possess a level of compassion for her.

“She had a lot thrown at her in one time, any human being anywhere is going to have a hard time,” he said. “It’s very difficult to be the new kid and to be the butt of the jokes and to be directed, like, be the direction of all the negativity; you know what I mean? … [Iggy] came at a time when culturally, this nation — she’s not from here — we were actually looking for a source for somewhere to place some pent-up aggression… And they just got it for no reason. In some cases, they brought it upon themselves, and in some cases, they were kind of just the easiest place to put some pent up aggression.”

When asked why he kept referring to Iggy as “they,” he responded:

“She is the nucleus,” he explained, “but there are a lot of other pieces around — including myself — that keep that machine working. And I feel like they have all the tools necessary to evolve beyond those situations.”

Azalea has since commented on her mentor’s interview, suggesting that she and the “Whatever You Like” may not be the best of friends, but he’s still her manager.
