Last winter, Jazmine Sullivan shed light on her tumultuous relationship with an ex-boyfriend who abused her. Since making the revelation, the “Forever Don’t Last” singer has been opening up more about the experience to fans. Recently, she shared a reflective Instagram post in which recalled a time when she spent hours in a local Pier 1 to avoid her violent ex.

I have an interesting story [about] Pier1. The last time I was in this store was during my abusive relationship [with] my ex 3-4 years ago. I used to come and walk around this store for hours just to get away from him and the house. I would cry in here.

The workers never bothered me. I guess they could tell a sad girl when they saw her. But today I was joyful, laughing and feeling the love from my bestfraan. So I’d like to take the time to thank God for who and where I am today. Walking around this store [with] this happy attitude today may be small to anyone else, but I know from where God brought me. So I just wanted to share. Take a minute and thank God that ur not where u used to be!!!

As you may recall, the Philadelphia native shared that her hiatus from the music industry was partially due to the abuse she endured in that relationship.

“It got to be abusive. And I stayed in the relationship because I loved him. Love can make you do some really crazy things,” she said during a concert in New York. “It can make you accept some really, really crazy things. And I thought I was doing what was right. I was trying to stay and be the down chick. Ride for my man: ‘He gon’ get it together! He ain’t gon’ do it again, ya’ll.’ But I had to realize that I had to love myself more than I loved him. Because real love doesn’t do that.”

That definitely goes to show that you never know what people are going through. We’re glad she found the strength to leave that situation.
