Cash Strapped Single Mom Sells Obama Letter

June 17th, 2011 - By madamenoire

Yahoo News says that a 26-year-old single mom is selling a letter hand-written by President Obama so that she can avoid being evicted from her home. Indiana resident Destiny Mathis is a college graduate with years of experience as a surgical technologist, but in January she lost her job and has been struggling ever since.

Out of desperation, Mathis wrote to President Obama and he himself wrote back by hand with the message “Please know that things will get better for you and your family.” The young mom says eviction is looming, so in order to provide for her family, she is selling the letter to Gary Zimmet, who owns a website that has sold eight Obama letters already, some for as much as $20,000.

Given the media attention to Mathis’ plight, do you think the president will step in and get her the help she needs without having to sell the letter? If you were in her situation would you sell your letter too?

Gail I agree with you being single I would not sell the letter. But when you have children who A. didn't ask to come here and B. need food and shelter its your responsibility as a parent to provide that. By any mean necessary(without doing something illegal). So I do agree that she is doing what she has to. And she's only receiving 11k for the letter.

Obama isn't going to help anyone but himself.

No one want to be evicted, but if I were in her situation I would sell my letter, too. I'd be worried most about my child(ren)'s mental and physical health. The last thing I would want is for them to be homeless. I'd sell that letter without feeling guilty or foolish. Now, if I was on my own I would sleep in someone's garage in an effort to keep that letter — I would do whatever I could to hold onto it.
