Kanye West On Kim Kardashian Dating Broke Black Dudes, Too
Kanye West is definitely saying that Kim Kardashian is not a gold digger. Besides the fact that his wife was already loaded by the time the two of them hooked up, there was never a reason for Kanye to think that Kim was about that golddiggin’ life. Especially because, as he so eloquently put it in his 2015 BET Honors acceptance speech over the weekend, his wife “has dated broke black dudes.’
On Saturday evening, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West were in attendance at the BET Honors taping, which was held in Washington D.C. to accept Kanye’s Visionary Award, presented to him by Dame Dash along with a tribute video that featured Common and Jay-Z. Always one to make headlines with his speeches at Awards shows, Kanye took this opportunity, in his own humbled way, to address the judgment that has circled the air around his wife.
“At the barbershop, I used to hear people always talking about, ‘Man, you know when an entertainer get on, of course you know he gon’ go and get a white girl and blah blah blah and a white girl gon’ get a rich Black dude,’ Kanye began. Then the punch line. “But I wanna say that my wife has dated broke black dudes. It got nothing to do with the money.” The audience burst out into laughter, and Kanye had once again had his moment.
Insecure much? Some might say it takes a lot of confidence to be able to acknowledge or reference your significant other’s dating past. Kardashian’s past includes relationships with Ray J, Reggie Bush, Nick Cannon and Kris Humphries. All were high-profile, and one even resulted in a high-grossing sex tape for Vivid Entertainment. (Media has speculated that Kanye was taking a jab at Ray J with the “broke” comment, but broke by whose standards?).
Maybe it was a way for Kanye to respond to everyone who always has something to say about his wife’s past. Or maybe he just felt like he had to address their interracial relationship (he spoke about racial discrimination and how Kim’s father, Robert Kardashian, once told her “one day, you may have a Black child…and it’s gonna be hard. You’re gonna see how hard it is.”) But while Kanye spoke of her father’s prediction, he didn’t really acknowledge his own. Remember his line in the “Golddiggers” song: “but when he get on, he’ll leave your ass for a White girl.”
