#TeamNatural: Halle Berry Fights Ex Over Nahla’s Hair

November 25, 2014  |

I first saw this story while scrolling through Instagram via Chris Rock’s feed. The comedian not only snaps pics with his celebrity friends, he sometimes posts the latest news and gossip. But I still thought it was a joke when I read the headline: “Halle Berry Takes Ex-BF To Court For Straightening Their Daughter’s Hair.”

Say what?

Yep. Halle Berry just took Gabriel Aubry to court claiming he’s trying to make Nahla, their six-year-old daughter, white. The former couple share custody over their daughter. It was about two years ago when Gabriel and Halle’s boyfriend at the time and current husband, Olivier Martinez, had that epic Thanksgiving Day brawl. Let’s just say Olivier served Gabriel two lumps. But it was then that the parents came to a shared-custody agreement. At one point, Halle sought permission to move with her daughter to France, arguing that the paparazzi, a convicted stalker and the other pitfalls of fame were making her feel unsafe in the U.S., but a judge denied the request.

Apparently, part of Gabriel’s daddy time lately has been spent getting little Nahla a blow-out. Halle was furious Gabriel was straightening Nahla’s naturally-curly hair and lightening it with highlights, and she is convinced it’s because he does not want Nahla to appear to be African American. Halle is bi-racial but has always made it clear that she identifies Black.

Halle didn’t show in court Monday morning, according to TMZ, but her lawyer Steve Kolodny did, along with Gabriel. After a lot of arguing the judge ruled neither Halle nor Gabriel could change Nahla’s look from its natural state.

So the judge is allowing Nahla’s hair to grow back naturally.

Score one for Berry, we guess. But it’s a shame how much these two parents don’t get along.

Halle does not play when it comes to her family. Halle married French actor Olivier Martinez in July 2013 and gave birth to their son, Maceo, that October.

Have you ever taken an ex to court over something like Nahla’s hair?
