The Business Of Love: The Power of Being A Celebrity Couple

Love is a many splendid thing. But the one thing is has been as of recently is a business. Power couples are the new win. It’s a surefire way to media scrutiny and constant celebrity attention. From Beyonce and Jay-Z to Kim and Kanye, all the way down to Tyga and Blac Chyna, the soap opera love story has officially taken over. Today’s celebrities know that the business of love is where it’s at: if you want to get in where you fit in, you need to find a significant other that could raise your stock.

That’s why it was refreshing to see the marriage of Solange Knowles to her new husband Alan Ferguson, 51, this past weekend in New Orleans. In their photos, these two exemplified true love, and they did it in style. Because the two of them don’t seem to ever use their union to get ahead, their wedding photos were welcomed as a breath of fresh air that many felt “broke the internet the right way.”

For Solange and Ferguson, it remains to be seen whether their love will translate into a business. For some, hooking up maximizes the business potential. Jay-Z and Beyonce together are more powerful than either of them individually. First, it was just a song or two. Then, an entire tour. Now, there’s an album in the works. The Carter empire has become a million-dollar money making machine. Still, despite the constant divorce rumors and the elevator beatdowns, Jay and Beyonce’s relationship is convincing. Because they were initially very private with theirs, the media bought into it. And the public perception that the two have always been “drunk in love” goes over well for the business. Though they each bring their fan base, they both grow each other’s audience.

On the other hand, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are, on their own, successful celebrities. When they first got together, the couple absolutely took the media by storm. Because Kardashian had publicly been involved with a few other celebrity men and turned up pregnant by Kanye while she was still legally married, the Kardashian-West relationship was more of a spectacle than anything else. Kardashian’s history made it hard to believe the love was genuine. But it didn’t stop the paps from following their every move. In fact, it made the media give them more attention, because the tabloids are just waiting to be the first to report something is going wrong. This week, Kardashian’s face was slapped on the cover of InTouch Weekly, claiming that the two are in a “divorce battle” over Baby North, while websites are bubbling up and saying Kanye is beyond irked because the Paper Magazine cover said Kim Kardashian and omitted her West name.

Because there is really no synergy between being a reality star and being an artist/music producer, the business of Kim and Kanye is primarily the media attention that the couple generates. True, that star quality can be monetized. But it seems to be short-lived without the constant cooked up drama between them. Without the details of their private life being revealed, the Kim Kanye business just isn’t there. There hasn’t been a talk of a reality show for the couple (which would certainly have any network salivating) and it doesn’t look like Kim is going to be laying vocals on a Kanye beat anytime soon (hopefully).

While Jay-Z and Beyonce and Kim and Kanye are probably the most popular examples of celebrity couples, there are relationships on the come up that seem to aspire to their status. A few months ago, Love and Hip Hop reality star Erica Mena got engaged to Bow Wow. It happened rather quickly, and left many wondering if the move was a calculated one. But only time will tell. And maybe TMZ.
