At a young age, Dana Owens strutted with a regality that was contagious. She gave herself the name Queen Latifah (Latifah is an arabic name meaning delicate and kind) and demanded respect for womanhood at a time when hip hop music was known for disrespecting it. She donned African garb and visually represented for her people. Queen Latifah released her first album in 1989 All Hail the Queen which was replete with feminist lyrics. The album was successful and featured the now classic single “Ladies First.” Her debut was followed up with Nature of a Sista’ released in 1991. Latifah has released 7 albums in total. The New Jersey native told VIBE:

Hip-hop definitely taught me a lot. Having to create your own identity and become known and respected in a male-dominated field—it requires some guts. There are times you have to be strong, and times when you have to stand alone for what you believe in.

Strong indeed. Queen Latifah has done it all: actress, rapper, Cover Girl Spokesperson and talk show host. Latifah returned to daytime television with a new outlook. She was originally on air in 1999. Latifah says this second time around she has more to offer:

“I’m in a different place in my life. I had a lot more zipping around the globe to do back then. I’m a bit more settled now, and I’ve learned a lot in life that has brought me to a place where I feel more comfortable in my skin.”
