Daddy & Me: 9 Flicks of Rohan and Zion Marley
We were all present in 1998, listening to a young Lauryn Hill sing “To Zion” on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. We listened as the overwhelmed 23-year-old struggled with discernment. As she vacillated between keeping her baby or not, but it’s the angels and prayers that never let us down. Lauryn decided to keep her son. In a 1998 interview with ESSENCE Lauryn Hill reflected:
“A lot of people said, ‘Girl, you’ve got a career. Don’t be having no baby now,'” she remembers. “I looked at myself in the mirror and I said, ‘Okay, this is a hard one,’ and I prayed on it. What I do know is that God is never going to give you a sign to not have a child if you are pregnant. That sign will never come. At least it didn’t for me. In my brain I said, ‘I’m okay financially. I have a man in my life who loves me. I have a supportive family. I believe I would be a good mother.’ I said, ‘Wow, the only reason for me not to have this child is because it would inconvenience me.’ And that wasn’t a strong enough argument for me not to have Zion in my life.”
In August of 1997, Hill gave birth to Zion David Marley who she shares with Rohan Marley, the son to reggae legend Bob Marley. Albeit the two are separated they still maintain a healthy relationship and co-parent their 5 children (Selah Marley, 1998, Joshua, 2001, John, 2002 and Sarah, 2008.)
Zion will soon be 17 and he has been spending a lot of time with his old man (rightfully so) the two are always posted up together on Instagram and if you missed it, click continue to check out our gallery of the two!
