20 Years Later: 11 Memorable Moments Of Aaliyah’s Debut Album

June 1, 2014  |

Around this exact time 20 years ago, the world was introduced to a soft-spoken mysterious 15-year-old songstress by the name Aaliyah. She made sure to mention in her interviews that her name meant “most exalted.” We were hooked. Fans wondered her age – which she kept a secret. Journalists prodded but no one really got the answer to how old the rising star was. She was extremely talented and strikingly beautiful yet donned boy clothes. Her debut album Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number was released in May 1994. The singer enjoyed major success and immediately topped the charts.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Detroit native’s debut, we’ve gleaned the internet for 11 of the most nostalgic and adorable pictures of Aaliyah during her ascension to stardom.

A Queen, A Trendsetter, Adventurous Artistically&Immortal.. So hard to believe this cd was released 20yrs ago. It (the cd)was a b- day present to myself&i played that cassette til forever! Aaliyah had a subtle coolness that was so potent, we felt like she was FAMILY that had made good on this humongous dream&we were given a slight view alongside! Her music is ever present with me&soo many others. Happy 20th anniversary, Aaliyah! We love you&thank you being a vessel of : candor, enchantment, love, laughter, loss &renewal! • Great album! This makes me want to go back and re listen to her music again. Aaliyah was always ahead of her time. The trends she set back then artists today are still using. What a amazing young lady…who was taken from us to soon. She will and always be one of my favorites.

That’s crazy I downloaded Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number a few months back cause I couldn’t get it out my head… Had no idea the album made 20 this year

Please. Naive? They’re her parents, much older than her. They let Aaliyah stay alone at R Kelly’s house with him when she was only 12. They let her be in his X rated videos. They had to have known what was going on because everyone else could see it. They simply pimped their daughter out for fame and fortune.

I think they were too trusting and very very naïve. Also Aaliyah’s uncle was in charge so they probably felt she was in good hands. I really blame the Uncle because he had to have known what was going on, but he didn’t care as long as Kelly was writing those hits.

The first album I ever purchased! I still remember blasting that cassette and clowning Tia Hawkins terrible unnecessary raps. I’M so into you, No one knows- still bangs!
    I feel so old, lol!

I don’t know what happened to my comment, but I just want to state that I was not condoning Aaliyah and R Kelly’s supposed relationship. When I was 10 years old and they appeared together in video’s and magazines, i saw them as big brother/little sister. I did not think of their relationship as a sexual one and regardless of what is said in the media that’s exactly how I remember them. Whatever may have happened behind closed doors is between Aaliyah, her parents, R Kelly and God.

I can’t believe it’s been 20 years. Man, time does fly. This was a good album. “At Your Best” (remix) was and still is the s**t. Btw wearing baggy clothes was in style back then *rolls eyes*. R.I.P.

I always wondered why Aaliyah’s parents allowed her to be seduced by R. Kelly.
