Lessons From My Tiny Teacher: Time Flies When You’re Having Fun

April 26, 2014  |

One thing most moms can agree on: your little one drives you up a wall! Another absolute we might all acknowledge is these little annoying, imaginative, curious creatures really can teach (or at the very least remind) us of a few fundamental truths. You know, like the familiar, but oft-forgotten “treat others the way you want to be treated” or the foundational “sharing is caring.”

We all have those hilarious, infuriating, enlightening (or all of the above) moments with our kiddos that remind us of these lessons we were taught way back in the stone age when we were little tikes. Here, I share with you teachable moments brought to you by Matthew, my feisty, gutsy, spunky tot who’s taught me a thing or two since he came kicking and screaming into my life! Enjoy, but more importantly, take note.

This week my two year old reminded me that time flies when you’re having fun!

Reflect with me for a moment: It was Friday, April 20, 2012. I was walking out of my office building excited that I wouldn’t be returning for a couple of months, and nervous that I was only 10 days away from my fast-approaching due date. I was expecting a little boy, my first child. I was planning to use the 10 days in between to tie up loose ends and prepare for my newest adventure—mommyhood. I was officially on maternity leave.

I had a lengthy to-do list of pressing issues I needed to handle before my little bundle arrived, but as fate would have it, I wouldn’t be able to mark off even one item on the list. I woke up the following morning with a light, cramp-y feeling in my abdomen, which subsequently turned into massively painful pressure all over my body. I was in labor—the real kind.

Hours later (at 8:59 p.m. to be exact), Matthew Alexander was born and my life was forever changed. In the 24 months since, my boy and I have lived quite the life. I’ve seen him take his first steps, get his first tooth, sent him off to his first day of daycare and seen him make his first close friends. He’s gone from communicating exclusively through murmurs and gestures to having full-out conversations with me. He’s traveled to over 10 states and has partied (Elmo and Jake and the Neverland Pirates style) with the best of them. Whether it’s walks around our beautiful neighborhood or cuddle time at then end of a trying day, we’ve shared some of my life’s greatest moments together.

That said, it seems like only yesterday that he came into my life. And with the whirlwind effect that his presence brought, I can only imagine what the next 24 months will bring. This past Monday, April 21st, Matthew turned 2! We celebrated his birthday in my hometown last weekend and were showered with love from our closest friends and family! We had FUN, but that comes as no surprise, as that’s the way things normally go when sharing amazing moments with my little guy! Happy birthday, Matthew!
