Study Finds You’re Not the Only Pregnant Woman Sneaking Some Wine
To sip or not to sip? It’s a question that gets expecting moms and doctors upset and confused. Some say a few drinks are fine while others say you shouldn’t even look at alcohol during pregnancy. A survey finds that despite what the sanctimommies will have you believe, most moms-to-be are sneaking a drink–as many as to one in ten.
Norwegian researchers found that 16 percent of women reported light drinking during the first trimester, 10 percent in the trimester and 12 percent admitted to binge drinking (yikes). These results came about as doctors were studying the connection between negative affect and drinking during pregnancy. It seems even light drinking during pregnancy (and many doctors say up to one glass of wine a day is okay) can increase symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Still, alcohol consumption during pregnancy has been linked to premature birth, low birth weight, fetal alcohol syndrome and other health problems.
