Kids find ways to amaze us every day. Unfortunately, 4-year-old Arianna Rath awed us by using her brains in a tragic situation—getting herself and her two-year-old sister out of a the wreck of their mother’s car. Today’s THV reported the girls’ mother, Jessica Rath, seems to have fallen asleep behind the wheel and went off the road near Naselle, Washington.

Rath was driving herself and her daughters to pick up her husband Keaton Huff in Portland, where he works as a fisherman. When his family didn’t show up as planned, Huff posted a message on his Facebook page asking for help. The accident seems to have occurred at midnight; the girls weren’t found until about eight hours later, huddled under a blanket in the brush. A passerby went to investigate the missing bark on the tree and instead found Rath dead in her car and the two girls nearby. The girls were taken for treatment in Astoria and then airlifted to the children’s hospital in Portland. Arianna was released but her younger sister Lyla was more seriously injured and is still in the hospital. Her status is unknown.
