First-grader Suspended for Making Gun with Fingers
A six-year-old in Silver Spring, Maryland was told he couldn’t come back from winter break the same day as his classmates because he pointed his fingers at friends and said “pow” a week after the horrific Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, according to NBC Washington. When Roscoe N. Nix Elementary School officials spotted the boy using his fingers as guns, they sent him home with a note for his parents saying he would be suspended after for the day following winter vacation.
The boy’s parents have since hired lawyer Robin Ficker to sue the school. Ficker spoke with his client to determine whether or not he understood what he was doing was wrong and it seems he doesn’t; the boy was just playing a game with his friends. Though the school system gives parents and students the option of appealing a suspension, the boy’s parents don’t feel this is enough. The family and their lawyers were set to meet with school officials on Wednesday.
