Good News: New HIV Infections Dropping for Black Women
Black women have long been the fastest rising group of new HIV infections in the United States, but MSNBC reports a new report from the CDC is showing that statistic is thankfully changing, and fast. The rate of new infections for black women dropped 21 percent between 2008 and 2010. Though the rate of new HIV infections overall didn’t change in that time, the change in black women was really dramatic.
Officials say the study shows education programs in black communities are really working. They remain “cautiously optimistic” that the downward trend is going to continue. Unfortunately, the news isn’t all good. In the period of time studied, black women still accounted for 70 percent of the new infections among women, and black men having sex with other men were the subgroup with the highest rates of new infections.
