Is Beauty Skin Deep? What Are We Teaching Our Daughters?

September 18, 2012  |

The day after the Democratic National Convention aired I couldn’t believe the hype surrounding Michelle Obama’s nail color. I actually had to do a double take to make sure I was reading the article on Yahoo correctly. I assure you I was.

Likewise, I was flabbergasted to hear about all the ridicule that Gabby Douglas was subjected to after representing our country with her glowing performances in this year’s Summer Olympic Games. The tabloids and news media outlets were merciless and who knows how it all truly affected Gabby in the end. The common ground here is that a great deal of emphasis is placed on physical appearance to the point where young women are afraid to look anything short of perfect. They strive to look the part of what has been advertised to be beauty. As mothers it’s our job to instill the confidence and esteem that our girls will need in order to function as strong, capable citizens.

The best example for our girls is us!

They watch the way you look at yourself and listen to how you talk about your shortcomings and flaws. Our words could become their actions, so be mindful of what you say when they’re within earshot, you’d be surprised how far positive and uplifting words and thoughts can go.
