I’ll start this article with the most truthful answer I can muster up being the mother of a teenage girl: not completely.
I would say that I know almost everything when it comes to my child’s teen adventures and to be quite honest, I can live with that. I started practicing very open communication with her when she was much younger with hopes that she wouldn’t feel uncomfortable when it was time to ask her the nitty gritty questions…like now!
My plan worked!!
The only downfall is that she’ll openly tell me about a quick kiss or her butt being swiped in the hall by a crazed teenage boy without hesitation.
Picture it; I’m standing there while she dishes out the dirt for the day with the fakest smile plastered across my face waiting for her to leave the room so I can collapse. She’ll never know that I’m dying inside. She’ll never know that once she’s gone I’ve broken out in a cold sweat while looking for my keys so I can drive up to the school to search for the boy. It sounds humorous I know.
As time marches on, I’ve accepted that I can’t rescue her from all of the bad things I don’t want to happen, but that I can be there for her as much as humanly possible and that’s exactly what I intend to do!
