The story of Sandra Bland’s death was so disturbing that naturally it garnered outrage and confusion, think pieces and discussion on social media.

In our quest for answers and justice, people believe the more awareness a person or story receives, the more likely someone will be held accountable.

But according to a statement from Bland’s family, sent to Black Greek organization, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., the family has asked the community not to participate in any of these behaviors.

Behaviors that include hashtagging, posting on social media or protesting.

Since the family are the people most strongly affected by this tragedy, and since they believe this is the best course of action, we’ll respect their wishes.
